Had a chance to fish for some Crappies down near Wabasha, Sunday. After trying several spots we managed to find a good run of very nice sized Crappies. They all came out of a flat area of about 4.5′ of water. We tried waxies, worms, and minnows. The minnows on small jigheads were what they
wanted. We even got a bonus Northern that grabed on to one
of the Crappies and wouldn’t let go till it was in the net.

Hey Willowcat, thanks for the report. The best is yet to come for crappies in the backwaters. Cooler weather is what will tigger them. They will be putting on the feed bag in preparation for the winter months. An old friend of mine used to just wait for fall crappie fishing, even more so then spring. He found them congregated and easy to figure with the low water levels of fall. He hunted only the monster craps and one of his favorite techniques was to use shiners, small to medium size. His theory was the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish. It worked. He also used beetle spins, silver blade with a white body and red stripes. He would swim it very slowly, just barely enough to get the blade spinning.
The traditional hot spring spots now hold the fall crappies.

    Yep, you betcha!
Just got back from an enjoyable morning in the backwaters. Had a chance to take my sister Dorothy – many of you have probably met her at the north store. We just hammered the nice gills and also got several very nice crappies. Today, we used small jigs without any meat.
Like Ron said, it should be good all the way until ice-up.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Playin hooky again?!!! Gee, sure must be nice. At least you took Dorthy with you instead of sticking her with working while you were fishing like usual. That must mean poor Mike F. had to hold down the store huh?! Anyway keep then reports comin.
    Thanks, Bill

Oh Bill, we are closed on Monday’s during the fall and winter.
So, no playing hooky today, but I’ll try to make up for it!

    Good Fishing,
