I am new to the forum and was just wondering what your favorite smallie lure is? Thanks for the reponses in advance. Also what is your favorite river, stream or lake to catch smallies in southern Minnesota? My favorite lure is the number 5 jointed shap rap in crayfish and favorite place to fish is the root river.

    Hey fish stalker,

Welcome! I like to throw shad raps on the rip rap of Lake Pepin for smallies. In a couple more weeks hair jigs in browns and blacks seem to work very well.

    Good Fishing,

Favorite = topwater like chug bugs or pop-r’s.

What catches more fish for me than anything else? A 3.5″ – 4″ tube fished on a 1/8th ounce super doo head.

    One of these…

I usually rig them by compressing the weed guards and shoving the whole works up inside the tube. You poke the eyelet through the plastic on the front of the tube far enough to allow you to tie your line to the head and you’re good to go. This method is best for rocks. Weeds or timber you’ll want to rig it with the guards exposed. Bluefleck, DeZurik and I have seen some VERY impressive head-to-head results when fished against a 90 degree eyelet head. With this head you get a much more erratic flutter n’ dart when you lift and drag the tube.

Well… I’d call it more of a can’t stand-up jig as I just don’t see that as being a strong point. But man do they pull fish. For a second opinion give Blue a holler or DeZurik… I’m sure they’d share some ways and situations to fish them that I’ve not run into yet.

I prefer blue or chartruse Rapala Countdown and #3 Mepps Aglias.
