Fishing Stories

We have all heard some fishing stories that seem a little on the edge of reality, but there could be some truth as well. I thought I would list a couple that come to mind and ask you to join in.
About 25 years ago, I heard that the DNR was doing a shock survey near Wilcox on the MS. River and came up with a 80 lb. northern. Supposedly this fish was gigantic and in good condition. It was released and who knows how many of its off-spring may still be in the same area? The current MN. record northern is 45 lb. 12 oz.
In Rochester’s Silver Lake, there are rumors of giant turtles – as big around as a small car. Seems the turtles have some high protein on their Canadian Goose diet and can grow extremely large.

OK, there’s a couple to get this going. Who else has some stories?

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Since I’ve been programed to tell “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me MOM”, I can only spread rumors. Rumor has it ecnook catches sheepies large enough to make even Still-a-kid jealous.

Years ago I was Musky fishing on Cedar Lake (near Star Prairie, WI). I was working my way down a breakline when I noticed a hen Mallard swimming along about 50 years in front of me. KA-BOOM ! A Musky took her off the surface like she was a Mayfly. Nothing left but a few feathers. This immediately led to two questions: I wondered if that fish was still hungry, and what did I have in the bait bucket that looked like a duck?

Ive heard when they last shocked Lake Wissota (WI), there was a world record Musky pulled up. But since it was not hook and line caught, it cannot be counted.

I WAS OUT ICE FISHING IN THE BLACKDUCK AREA WITH A GOOD FRIEND WHEN HE DECIDED TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE TO DO SOME HOLE HOPPIN. I FOLLOWED HIM OUT OF THE HOUSE TO DO THE SAME, NEGLECTING THE “SWEETHEART ROD” THAT HE LEFT DOWN THE HOLE WHILE WE WERE OUT HOPPIN HOLES. IF HE TELLS THE STORY, IT HAD TO BE THE LARGEST FISH IN THE LAKE THAT TOOK HIS ROD AND REEL RIGHT DOWN TO DAVY JONES LOCKER. I AM STILL CONVINCED THAT IT WAS A 1/2 TO 3/4 GILL LIKE ALL OF THE OTHERS THAT WE WERE CATCHING. THE BEST PART OF THE WHOLE DEAL WAS THE LOOK ON HIS FACE WHEN HE REALIZED THAT HE LOST $140.00 ICE FISHING SET UP, IT TOOK ABOUT 10 MINUTES TO MAKE HIM BELIEVE ME THAT I WAS NOT PLAYING GAMES WITH HIM, AND THAT THE ROD REALLY DID GO DOWN THE HOLE. SORRY STRADIC I JUST COULDN’T PASS IT UP…

They say(ya’ll know they right?) catfish that live on the bottom of Lake Oahe are supposedly so big once a diver works on the dam intakes there, he/she will never dive that area again. The say some of them are bigger than the divers.

This one still makes me worry about swimming in the river. I assume this one is true, it made it with pics of the kid into my local paper at the time about 12 years ago. Anyways on Lake Odessa in southern IA which is connected to the mississippi by a small channel, a family was out tubing on the lake. Thier youngest boy, i think he was around 10 fell off the tube and as his parents were going back to pick him up something grabbed ahold of his leg and started pulling him under. When they finally got the boat to him there was a stuggle to get him out of the water cause soemthing big had ahold of his leg. When they finally got him out, one of his legs looked like someone took some 40 grit sandpaper to it. They figured some huge cat saw a convenient opportunity to have a feed. DNR never figured out what it was for sure either let the incident go as a catfish mauling i guess.

THIS GOT ME THINKING ABOUT A TRIP TO CANADA LAST YEAR WITH MY BUDDY “NO PANTS LANCE” (STRADIC10). IT WAS OUR 1ST TRIP TO CANADA TOGETHER AND AFTER A 10 1/2 HOUR DRIVE WE 1ST OPEND A FEW BEERS AND PUT THE BOATS IN THE WATER. WE WERE FISHING WITH A GROUP OF 6 PEOPLE, 3 BOATS. SO WE HIT THE WATER AFTER UNLOADING AND FISHING WAS VERY SLOW, SO I DECIDED TAHT WE SHOULD DO A PORTAGE TO ANOTHER LAKE. THIS PORTGAGE WAS ONLY A FIVE MINUTE WALK AND THERE WAS A BOAT AND MOTOR WAITING FOR US ON THE OTHER LAKE. AS WE APPROCHED THE PORTAGE SITE I TOLD MY PARTNER TO GRAB THE TREE AND WE WILL UNLOAD OUR GEAR OUT OF THE BOAT, WELL THERE WAS A LARGE ROCK IN THE WATER THAT LOOKED LIKE A GOOD SPOT TO UNLOAD ON, ONE FOOT HIT THE ROCK AND THE OTHER STILL IN THE BOAT, THE BOAT WENT ONE WAY AND STRADIC10 WENT FOR A SWIM, MIND YOU THIS WAS EARLY JUNE AND THE WATER WAS ONLY IN THE UPPER 50’S. AFTER LETTING EVERYONE IN THE PROVIDANCE KNOW THAT HE WAS NOT HAPPY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED(LOUD YELLING F-EN HIMMERS) HE DECIDED THAT FISHING IN HIS BOXER SHORTS WAS BETTER THEN SITTING IN WET PANTS, AND NO PANTS LANCE WAS BORN. EVERYONE IN CAMP THAT WEEK REFERED TO HIM AS HIS WONDERFUL BOAT PARTNER DID….NO PANTS LANCE… THIS WAS THE 3-RD TRIP THAT WE HAVE TAKEN TOGETHER THAT ENDED UP WITH STRADIC10 IN THE WATER… 1ST TIME WAS IN THE MISS AT BASS CAMP IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER(DADS FORD WAS FULL OF RIVER WATER), 2ND TIME WAS ORR,MN FALLING OFF OF A ROCK REEF INTO ELEPHANT LAKE, AND NOW CANADA…I GUESS WHEN YOU HAVE A FISHING PARTNER LIKE THIS, IT NEVER GETS DULL…

When I was 16 I borrowed my Dad’s boat to go fishing. As I was flying, I mean trolling up river a gigantic Loch Ness monster type fish jumped up and chewed the prop off…I swear thats how it happened!

Waterfowler, I never do anything stupid. Like I never backed my boat into the water at the last IDA Get ToGether at Everts Resort and had my Grandaughter hold the rope and was watching her feet in my mirror as she was standing close to the van instead of watching the boat and when I started to pull the trailer out of the water the rope got caught and instead of the boat going off the end of the trailer it went off the side of the trailer over my side guide into the water bending my side giude straight outwards. Like I said I never do anything stupid. Its when you can’t laugh at yourself is when you are in trouble Bud. We all do dumb things sometimes. Hang in there.
    Thanks, Bill
