I heard a rumor that a boat went over the Lake Zumbro Dam while night fishing Friday night. Does anyone have any details on this? Please be careful out there folks!

I have heard about it from a few people I know. It sounds like it was a family of 3. The young daughter save her fathers life by pulling him to shore. The driver of the boat (i heard it was the father) was drunk. Said that when they turned the boat over on the bottom of the dam there were beer cans floating everywhere. All survived. I’ll bet that was a hell of a ride. Troy Pike

The Wabasha County Sheriff’s office did respond and is investigating the accident. They got a call around 4AM from Mac’s Park Place. There was an adult male, adult female and a juvenile female on board. It is believed the females are mom and daughter and the adult male was a friend. All three of them were transported to the hospital. Not sure if any of them are still hospitalized. Still under investigation and very few if any details are being released pending the outcome of the investigation.

Yes there is speculation that booze might have been involved. However, the last couple times Mike and I were fishing on Zumbro, we came toward the dam because we had launced at Pondarosa. Maybe it is just me, but I personally thought that area is not marked all that well, especially for night traffic. If you were new to the lake and zipping along you come up to the dam pretty quickly.
Anyone else feel that it should be marked futher back and much better?

I don’t know if there is any light out there at night or not. I don’t see any lighting going across there in the day time. If not, they certainly need some for safety sake. If the guy was drinking then he will deserve whatever he gets for it. If thats the case its too bad there were other people with him for their sake but it sounds like the girl saved him. They were all very lucky to be alive.
    Thanks, Bill

Anyone operating a boat on a strange lake at night had best slow down. The last time I checked, boats weren’t equipped w/ headlights. Even on lakes you know, w/ moonlight, etc, SLOW down.

Zumbro is one of two lakes I’ve been on w/ dams – the other is in Missouri. Both are marked identically.

The other MN fishing web site has more info and pictures of the boat being removed.

I didn’t think it was appropriate to add a link. It’s under the Rochester section of that site.

Hey UG I’m glad you are well aware of where that dam is. Since I’ll be riding with you on Zumbro soon.

Hi everyone! I’ve been spending my time on this site just wondering around checking it out. I must say I’m impressed at the format, content and extent of info on here! Thanks for the warm welcome! I’m starting to feel right at home already. You’ll probably find me doing most of my posting on the southern Mn or Mn River Forums. I live about 2 blocks from the Mn River in N. Mankato, and I do alot of fishing there. Hope to see some of you on the water, and if you are ever over my way don’t hesitate to give me a holler and we can set up some fishing time. Catch ya later got to get up early and go fishing tomorrow!
