Did a little tour of the area today. Started in the Mississippi backwaters near Kellogg. Found lots of smaller sunfish and crappies. Small hair jigs tipped with a waxie, fished 3 feet under a small bobber worked best. Also got a 3 lb. largemouth bass on a spinner – lots of fun!
Came back to Rochester and fished for about 45 minutes at Foster Arends with 3 nice trout and 3 misses. The small jigs tipped with a waxie produced everything except 1 trout that hit a spinner.
I can also report that the panfish are starting to turn on at several of the flood control impoundments around town. Try small presentations – small jigs tipped with a waxie, crappie minnows, plain hooks with waxies or worms.
It’s time to get out there and have some fun!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Thanks for the report. Sounds like a day of fun. [playing hookie hey!] What colors and size jigs were the best for each species of fish? Got lots in stock?

    Thanks, Bill

thank for the report. I’ll have to check out foster again some time soon, by the way were on te pond are you fishing?, and yes the fish are biting at the flood control area’s, i wnt to willow today and caugt a fair amount of bluegill, and you wont believe wha else i found…….somebody tied some fishing wire to the peir and there was a decent ized bull head on the other end, i’se say probably at least 14″-16″ but i could tell it had been there for a while,, sick looking cut up from the line, so i cut it loose, that crap just bothers me. oh yea they fixed the peir too!!!……. happy fishing

Yes, fun afternoon of fishing! I like to fish Foster Arends near the swimming beach, but there are really no bad areas on the lake. I believe the trout swim around the lake instead of staying in one area.
Yesterday, the best color of jigs was an orange head with yellow body. We have lots of them because over the years I have found that color pattern to produce consistently for most fish.

    Good Fishing,

Fished Foster Arends for about 45 minutes late this afternoon. Got a really beautiful colored 17 inch rainbow and a nice bluegill – probably the biggest bluegill I’ve ever caught from Fosters – about 7 inches.

    Good Fishing,

Went to one of the flood control lakes this afternoon. Caught a lot of bluegills and crappies.
There was a large dead fish floating off shore and eventually the wind blew it in. Turned out it was about a 4 lb. largemouth bass. When I looked at it, I was very surprised to find a dead crappie lodged sideways in the mouth of the bass. Apparently the bass died from choking on the crappie? The crappie was about 6 inches long.
The fish today wanted small jigs with plastics, no need to tip with a waxie. They were between 2-4 ft. deep and I stayed in the fish catching zone by using a bobber.
From reports I am getting, it sounds like almost all the flood control lakes are starting to produce fish.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Fished Foster Arends tonight and fished a different area than I usually do and not even a bite. Didn’t see anyone else catch anything either where I was fishing. Tried using a slip bobber and jig with plastic and no takers. Next time I’ll go back to using powerbait on a hook and splitshot as the last time I used it I caught some nice fish. Was a beautiful night to be out there though. Of course its always great to be on or by the water.
    Thanks, Bill

    Hey Bill,

Yes, the fish were not biting well. I got 2 light bites and missed both. It sure was a nice evening!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

I think thats why they call it fishing and not catching. Anyway I learned a new spot and tried a new technique from the way I usually fish Fosters and was fun to be out. Next time we shall have better luck and the fish will not be as lucky.
    Thanks, Bill
