As Tom pointed out to me this morning, the correct spelling is morel mushrooms….. Does anyone have any more specific hints or tips? If I go looking in a stand of woods, what are some ways to cut down on unlikely areas (other than what Tom has already posted)? Is the type of soil important, or the type of trees? Are there certain things to look for that always seem to be present where the mushrooms are?
When the lilacs start popping out leaves good, its time to start looking. Elm tree’s are an excellent spot, especially if there dieing, and still have some bark left. South and west exposures are best to look first.

OK Dave you might as well pick them up for him too
Have you guys got a bait shortage down in IA? The winter kill on the lakes up this way has been tough on minnows. I have been having a difficult time getting any suckers or shiners to be used for gators. Hopefully with the warmer weather, the shortage will end soon. Thanks for your input on the mushroom questions!
