Did you get hit with snow again last night? Up here it was just a dusting. But today the wind is here. Forecast for the week doesn’t look good, cold but not much snow. Now that we are getting more daylight it would be nice if it warmed up a bit.

Couple inches in Farmtown, wind has been howling for some time now. Going to head out to the wood pile, start a fire, hunker down get caught up with some bookwork.
February 24, 2019 at 8:59 am #1837979Northwest Rochester here.
I’m just taking a break from shoveling my deck off. There is at least 3 feet of snow from just this week’s snow. It was pretty much clear a week ago. We also got about a half inch of ice right before the snow started falling last night.I’m hearing there are emergency vehicles stuck out there including tow trucks. Hospitals are opening up beds for employees to sleep as they can’t get home and others can’t get in.
Stay far away from here if at all possible.

February 24, 2019 at 9:09 am #1837985We got a few more inches overnight in IGH. It’s blowing like crazy out there, making it really fun to move snow around. I scraped most of the driveway clean so hopefully the sun that just started peaking out will clear off the rest. At least moving all this snow is a good workout! I’m using muscles I didn’t realize I had!
February 24, 2019 at 9:19 am #1837988Sharon I grew up in IGH in the 70’s. Amazing how it has changed since my days there. Progress I guess, but it was fun snowmobiling there before they were building houses everywhere.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559February 24, 2019 at 9:36 am #1837994We got the ice too Munchy. We’re northwest….the old Crenlo plant almost across the street and Cascade Creek right in our back yard. I have over a foot where the wind doesn’t get to play games. Like in front of the garage doors where the drifts were in the neighborhood of 3 feet high and out about ten feet. I just cleared the flat ground out to where the drive goes UPHILL to the street.
I lost my drive in the snow blower other than a second or third gear crawl and that’s only on flat ground. The rest of the drive will be a shovel job and I’m thinking some today and some tomorrow. Of course we have a 3 foot curb so where the plows played this morning I have an abundance of the crap. This is one of those heart attack snows but I’m retired and can pace myself. Plenty of food. We have a few beers and if I get hard up I can go sit in my workroom in the garage, turn the heat up, the radio on and sip 4 Roses Small batch….maybe even inject some baits. I’ve got plenty of diversions from any hard work.
February 24, 2019 at 9:43 am #1837999Near Pepin, WI last night before it was done snowing. This is a main highway that was completely plowed before this, not a back county road.

February 24, 2019 at 10:35 am #1838014I live/work in SE Minnesota and left for work at 4. Took a turn onto the county road I needed and could barely, and I mean barely see where I needed to turn. This snow is bad and deep but the wind creating the blizzard is bad too. I went off the road and into a ditch. Called the county and find out the plows and tow companies had been ordered off the roads hours ago. So I waited for a few hours until one of America’s finest (a farmer) stopped and pulled me out. While the smart and common decision after that would’ve been to drive home and be safe, I’m apparently committed to the cause way too much so I went to find another guy I work with who was stuck so we could both go in and help our team out. Well he called and said he’d rather just say in his vehicle so I turned around and headed back toward work. Got stuck again in a drift damn near in the middle of the road. Seemed like an easy fix but even shoveling wouldn’t help. Snow plow eventually came by and pulled me out of the drift. So in 4 1/2 hours I never made if farther than 3 miles from my house and got stuck twice. And now I’ve missed my first day of work without prior approval (never called in sick or anything) in my entire adult life.
With the sun up it doesn’t seem so bad out right now, but being stuck in the dark and no visibility and pants frozen stiff as a board wasn’t the greatest feeling. It’s dangerous just to even be outside right now so thanks to all those who lend a hand, shovel, or try and help people out.

I’m in the same area and last night I had to drive about 2 miles on a few gravel roads around 1 am. There was absolutely no telling where the road vs where the ditch was. Simply drive as straight as you can and hope for the best. I got lucky as all get out to get within a block of my house (see above). I wont make that mistake again!
February 24, 2019 at 11:10 am #1838021wow, I feel for you guys. that bites. up here in stearns county we might of had an inch of snow, but that wind is sure howling today.
February 24, 2019 at 11:41 am #183802914 miles west of Rochester. 12.5” of the white cr@p….
2 week forecast stinks. Cold

I’m sure it looks really different now. I grew up in SSP and I remember my folks driving us over to IGH to their friend’s farm who had horses. Felt like I was way out in the country. I wish we still had open land for snowmobiling and four wheeling. So much is being developed. I’d rather see more woods.
February 24, 2019 at 1:56 pm #1838052All roads in and out of Rochester are now closed. Olmsted county sheriff called for a state of emergency and asking the National Guard to come help out. Crazy day.
February 24, 2019 at 4:34 pm #1838076I’m still smiling here finally ponyied up and bought a snowblower a few blizzards back that thing has literally saved years for my back . There is something to be said about the drifts out there, i went up to station this morning and got stuck in my half ton pickup In 4 wheel drive couldn’t see past my windshield and drove into a drift , this happened right in P town on a street that had already been plowed once quick work with my snow shovel and off i went
February 24, 2019 at 6:55 pm #1838108Anyone who lives in MN without a snowblower is not right in the head. I used to shovel but fk that, never again!

I don’t own a snowblower. I got this Lil guy for cheap. He had the driveway done in about 8 hours.

February 25, 2019 at 7:38 am #1838189Just saw on the news that I-35 is still closed from Owatonna to the Iowa border. Must be a mess down there. Now that the winds are dying lets see some photo’s!
February 25, 2019 at 7:48 am #1838194Also hope no members were hurt in the big car pile-up in Wisconsin. They are reporting it was over 100 vehicles. I wonder if it was the stretch between Madison & Beloit?

I’m still pretty young, spry, and athletic so shoveling never bothered me too much but as soon as I could afford to buy and maintain a new snow blower, I did so. Its one of those things that usually just sits there for months on end and then, when you need it, its a life saver! Shoveling this month would ruin your back. That stuff from the road at the end of the driveway that the plow leaves is brutal.

my son in law is pretty fit and shovels. Problem now is that it’s about seven feet high along his driveway, that’s a lot of throwing to clear them!
February 25, 2019 at 8:33 am #1838215A tank, yes a tank…is stuck outside Wabasha. It was being used by the national guard to try and get to stranded motorists. There were dozens of vehicles (that law enforcement was aware of) where people were forced to spend the night in their cars as it was impossible to get to them.

I would have thought a snowmobile might work better, but what do I know. Let this be a lesson to be prepared in the winter. Have a couple of blankets maybe a candle and lighter along with a full gas tank if you must venture out into those conditions.

Agreed 100%.
There was supposedly some bus stranded which they were trying to get unstuck as it was loaded with people. In the time of messing around with a tank, you’d think they could’ve offloaded a lot of people onto sleds.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559February 25, 2019 at 9:06 am #1838234I don’t think it was the amount of snow in its own right that caused the most problems in Rochester, its all the snow that we’d gotten in the couple weeks prior to this storm. Literally there was no place to put snow before this came. Lots of Rochester is closed down today yet simply because the street crews were way behind in clearing snow from the major travel corridors from the two previous snowfalls and were struggling to get to the more remote residential areas.
The outlying prairie and hill country around Rochester in every direction has been drift prone for as long as I can remember. At I35 and I90 there are stop arms that close the interstates at that point but east of there and on state Highways there are no physical barriers to stop traffic. Most of the problem places are where the traffic had no barriers.
This storm just isn’t good.

I still shovel, and hope to make it until my 1 year old son can take over the honors. The 6 foot + drifts are a bit of a challenge now, so if we get more snow I’m just pushing it into the street and leaving a note that Dutchboy on IDO said it was cool…
February 25, 2019 at 12:23 pm #1838323Yeah, you would think someone had access to a trail groomer or something other than a tank. Tractor with tracks?
February 25, 2019 at 1:37 pm #1838351Here in Whitehall Wi. we got 16 inches what a mess with the winds if not for that it would not of been so bad.

Pile up was on I41 near Oshkosh/Appleton. 1 fatality so far.

Oneida county, WI posted that they wanted snowmobiles off the trails till they were groomed. Apparently snowmobiles were getting stuck in the drifts.
