Can anyone explain how flow and level in the river affect the fishing? I fish pool 4 quite a bit from the dam down to maiden rock area on lake pepin. I’m not great at catching walleyes have good days and bad. I would like to know how the flow and level changing affects the fish so I know how and where to look for fish at different stages of the water. Thanks for any info.

You should get some really detailed answers from some of the more experienced guys but here’s my simple way of looking at it.

High and fast water concentrates fish. Look for slow water next to current seams where fish can wait and ambush prey moving downstream. Fish will move into backwaters with high and fast water looking for bait. If you find fish, chances are they are stacked in and you can have great success in a spot or two.

Low and slow water spreads the fish out. I look for fast moving seems or back flowing current areas. I don’t fish pool 4 in the summer but this is when fish slide into the lake and spread out. You need to cover water when it’s low and slow.

Thanks Matt that makes sense. Hopefully I can spend quite a bit of time on the river this year to find some fish n test some presentations with the changes in the river.
