Fall is here and the temps of late have made it feel more like October than September.

Our river here at Prairie is still very high at just short of 13 feet and our normal stage is in the 7 foot range. Normal fishing right now would be rip rap shore line and wing dams pitching cranks and jigs and plastics… But now with all the higher water my normal spots are out of the question.. So I have been in the back waters looking for clean water and current breaks… I have been putting the Rapala Rippn Raps to the test.. Quick back up here.. I put a pile of these in my tackle box for a trip to LOTW in July and I completely struck out with them…so after my return I had re watched the In-Depth Outdoors show where James and Paul were pounding the walleyes on them on Green Bay… So I put in a phone call to Mr. Holst asking him a few questions on the technique on fishing these.. Well I was working them just like a jig and that was my problem… Back to the current day.. I now will cast the Rippn Rap out.. let it settle to the bottom or near bottom and give it a RIP !!! Almost like a snag’n rip… and then let it settle to the bottom again with almost slack line..repeat this with some line retrieval until your out of the fish zone.. I boated nearly 30 stripers and one 19″ walleye like this yesterday afternoon… My arm is sore !!!

Well the river here is expected to fall around 3′ in the next week, so I’m sure that will move the fish I’m on now to other places so it a game of hide and seek for me.. but that’s the fun of it !!!

Nice report. I have had some very good luck with the Rippin Rap on Lake Pepin. The amount of “rip” varies sometimes, but it is always necessary. I must say that they do not always work for me. However, I am really liking the whole “reaction strike” thing. I have been working a lot more with the Rippin Rap and the Snap Rap this year and my results have been fantastic – everything from perch, white bass, walleye, sauger, drum, northern, and even lake trout. Get it in their face and drive them crazy. It works.
