Damn you Rapala… Damn you! Well they now offer a smaller ripping rap. That sound you hear is another $50 in my table box.

No doubt! Told myself I wasn’t going to buy any new tackle this season as I have so much stuff now but found myself at the check-out line of Fleet Farm with a handful of these.

Your call BW but difrent action and that will give you different sound. I was about begging those connected with Rapala to come out with this size. JMO but the Rippin Rap is one of the Baits that go down in history as one of the all time Baits.

I agree Asylum… It is one of the first baits that I have watched on TV that actually produced. It is hands down one of my first lures down the hole for searching and sorting.

IceAsylum Beat me to it but those little buggers are going to crush fish wether you like it or not lol I just ordered a bunch my self and am uncomfortably over excited to do some damage this year with them! IceAsylum has a place with my name on it this year I hope where I can truly put these guys to the test!

I took a look at them at Scheels this morning and thought better of buying any….then picked up a couple super dinky jigging raps in purple/chartreuse for my dock fishing. Can’t hardly go wrong with the color, but I agree with the sentiments aimed at Rapala. Why can’t they just have two colors and one bait?

I actually had pretty good luck with #4’s and #5’s last season so I have been picking up #3’s here and there when I can buy them at some sort of discount. Think I have 3-4 now in my “go to” colors.

We were fishing on Red a couple of years ago and one of the guys had a uv green one on and he had his rod sitting on his lap and it got bite, it was a nice perch. And about a half hour later same thing but this time it was a nice crappie. Both fish the bait had been sitting there motionless for a few minutes. I have always thought about putting one on the rattle reel and see what happens. I always forget when we get to the lake to give it a try, maybe this year. Funny to think that it could be a good bait just hanging there motionless.

Bought one for my first ever trip to Red. Guide saw it and said, “oh you’ll be the sacrificial lamb:)” What he meant is that I would call them in and the live bait setups would seal the deal.

As it happens, well nothing happened. Was pretty slow and gave it a fair shake on and off to see if I could call some fish in.

FWIW – There’s almost no chance of a bait being completely motionless if the rod was sitting on a person’s lap. It had some subtle movements.

Most people I talk into trying jigs way over work them. Especially ice fishing.
I then instruct them to hold it as still as possible. Often to their amazement something thumps them.

With marabou and fur hair tied on jigs. The jig is almost never dead still. Same with the thin tailed plastics.

Back to the rippin rap it convinced me during a summer night
fishing trip. Minnows and jigs failed to produce anything. Even though the fish finders showed a school beneath us. Partner tied on a nickle plated sonar and was surprised by an immediate bite.
I decided to try the ultra lite rippin raps . I had just bought them a few days prior to trip.

It out produced the sonar blade bait rather quickly. So partner did
a swan dive into my tackle box to get the other chrome finish one. The crappies just jumped all over them until daybreak. Will never figure out why fish will ignore live minnows at times. Not often but it does happen. Then jump all over some plastic or metal thing.

Been one of my go to lures ever since.

This new 03 size should be a jumbo perch killer.

They are pretty damn good on open water as is the case. They won’t outproduce live bait for me but they will trigger the bigger fish in a school to attack. I will have to try a couple in the smaller size i guess.

I can second that…. more so open water efforts. Pretty sure it is all my poor effort… but I’ll try again next summer, or even yet this next two weeks on my crappie efforts. I put on a gulp 1″ minnow and kill them, live bait nothing… gotta they a rippin rap tomorrow.

I should have clarified, I like rippin raps and have had moderate success on them. And the new smaller size, I’m sure, will have it’s place. I guess my point was I already have a large variety of Chubby/Lindy Darters, and I have a VERY hard time believing the Rippin Rap profile and action is so different to justify spending $6/lure loading up on them. But I’m not going to tell you (or anyone) not too! jester

That’s funny as i can’t buy a bite on a gulp minnow. I have had best luck open water with both rippin raps and small jigging raps when I use very short jigging motions. I watched Al Lindner brag about how he hammers crappies with the raps and he was ripping them about a foot. I tried his way but just the slightest jigging motion worked best for me. I have definitely gained confidence in these style lures and am no longer afraid to deploy them. Good luck guys.

These responses clearly shows how everyone has their own style. I see it so frequently with crankbaits, various plastics, bladebaits,…and so on. One person knocks the snot out of the fish and another can’t touch them. I think what makes a rippin rap so unique is the wide range of presentations you can have. Anything from slow to hyper speed. I just ordered 50 #3, 50 #4, and 75 more #5s. I found a few closing dams that eat bladebaits regularly didn’t digest the rippin raps as fast whistling whistling Gave the eyes time to inhale them yay

I keep a fiskas tipped on a noodle rod in the hole at all times. It always produces, but as it was said above, the ripping rap calls them in and sorts the size. I used them on a lake last year and they worked for 1 hour at day break and 1 hour at sunset. Everything else was live bait. I will say that when they work it always seem to be a quality fish. I was originally going to but on a bigger treble, but those are some sticky little buggers on there. Finally as others said, less movement is more. A little twitch is all it takes.

I crushed big crappie on Christmas Eve last year on GlenElder here in KS. Caught a mess of 2-3 lb white bass and some big wipers and even catfish on them. I’ve got a ton of all sizes and colors!

Have any of you guys with access to these early this season or from last season used the #3’s with a TUCR Bullwhip?

LOL, I was just going to ask about rod suggestions for the ripping rap (just ordered a dozen 03’s in various colors). I was planning on using a TUCR QT……I find that 1/16oz seems to be the sweetspot for that rod, but not sure if this type of lure would require a heavier rod.

I picked some up yesterday from Scheels. They were already getting picked over and we don’t even have ice around here yet!
At $6 for a crankbait the size of a nickel, they’re a bit pricey. They look like great baits, though, and I’m excited to drop the pink clown or glow white down to a school of crappies.
I matched it up to a light-power Tickle Stick and it felt just right.

I tied one on my 32″ bullwhip and I thought it handled well, but that is out of water. I used #4 rippin raps on my bullwhip last year and I didn’t think that was bad either. I think the bullwhip is a perfect rod for the #3 size.
