Ripley vs. Squirrel

Funny situation this weekend. Ripley loves to watch birds and squirrels in our yard. Squirrels really amp him up, and I’ll usually let him out to scare them off. He’s been known to catch them on occasion.

Saturday, I let him out, and he tore around back. The squirrel on the feeder froze in sheer panic. Ripley was confused–he knew it was there and could smell it, but I think he couldn’t find it because he’s used to pheasant hunting, and birds are on the ground. Eventually, he locked in on it, and I was able to get this photo through the window.

There they sat motionless until the squirrel tried to make a break for it. rotflol

My dog wishes she was that good at catching them.

I could use him at my house. The damn Tree rats are eating all my bird food. The daisy red rider is not doing the job. Last week I shot one at short range and I think he picked up the BB and threw it back at me. Another determined squirrel just sits on the feeder and lets me take shot after shot at him. I know I hit him once in awhile because he flinched slightly when he is hit. At this point he will take the beating is favor of the tasty bird food.

If I can offer some advice on a more efficient weapon: try a pellet rifle. I have a Ruger pellet rifle with a scope and its deadly on back yard trouble makers. Plus it also has a suppressor on the end of the barrel so its super quiet. It sounds like someone opening a can of soda or beer when I shoot. BB’s from a BB gun tend to spray – they’re very inaccurate especially if you’re using open sights too.

I have a $55. (open sights) pellet gun. Only way to go if sniping for squirrels. I don’t shoot more then 60′. Very few make it very far unless I screw up the shot.

My dogs are gone now and the FW likes watching the damn squirrels so I donate the bird seed. flame

My folks live in Sartell (I grew up there) and also have a ton of squirrels. Ripley loves going to visit them. Dad thins them out when possible, but he also has a neighbor that has reported him, so he has to be selective. rotflol

I will agree, though, that a break-barrel pellet rifle does wonders. Just don’t miss or they get wise to the sound of the window opening. doah

The red rider was kind of a gag gift a few Xmas’s ago. Got it along with a Tee shirt that said ” you’ll shoot your eye out ” I know it has no effective value in squirrel control. I do get a kick out of trying to hit something with it from my window. I think its about time to step up the serious control of some of these tree rats. Their #’s are just getting way to high. Some days I think I’m feeding every squirrel within 5 miles. A pellet gun with a suppressor sounds like the ticket. I hope you don’t need a 200.00 tax stamp for that suppressor jester Then again, If some of the wack job politicians get their way – Even pellet guns will be banned. Better get one now before a ban scare drives the price up.

I’ve got a Crosman Vantage NP that I have been quite happy with and isn’t too loud even without a “supressor”.
