I experimented with a number of different set ups. Baitcaster, spinning, long rod, short, fluorocarbon, braid. If you’re Rippin’ any length of time fatigue is what you guard against therefore spinning was preferable over baitcaster (lower center of gravity). Braid was a must. Fluoro and mono are thicker, have more resistance and stretch that they get really tiring to rip after awhile. A longer, faster tip worked better for me once you hook the fish to keep tension high and hooks in the mouth. The rod I settled into is a 7′-2″ Daiwa Tatula spinning rod MHXS. Sufix 20 lb 832 braid with a 10 pound Yo-Zuri Hybrid 4 foot leader.
