With open water coming in 4 or 5 weeks the urge for open water crappies is setting in pretty bad. Over the last few years we’ve had really decent luck using a 1-7/8″ minnow bait right at ice out and I’ve always thought a slightly bigger bait would do even better, so I ordered up the sister bait to the first one and it’s really a dandy bait in both the way it injects and in size.
The first order of business when I received the mold was to inject a couple hundred baits in chartreuse for tail stock. Next the twin injector came out and those blue backed baits got made. Next came a tail color on a split color body, which is the real test, and the purple baits came out as close to perfect as anyone could wish for and the weld at the tail is solid. The blue and purple baits have zero colorants in them, the purple and blue is achieved with a mess of micro glitter in clear plastic. Both are HOT crappies colors/patterns. The rigged plastic is on a 1/24 jig with a #6 hook.
Now I’m ready to get serious about making enough baits for the early season. The weather has turned a hair chilly today, but as soon as the next 20+ degree day shows up I plan to hit the shop in earnest to get that chore wrapped up. Then I’m darned close to ready for when the ice opens up.
