apparently I am a financial casualty to the COVID-19 virus. I was told that sept 30th will be my last day at the union hall after 13 1/2 years. I requested a pension estimate form, I guess I think I can or will enjoy retirement with pension and SS.

looks like more time on the water and in the woods in my near future.

Congratulations and condolences. You get a lot of fun bashing, especially on the other site about your union stand, but I would think you would have more protection than a sudden termination. Unless a person has a lot of payment, I had none, retirement is a lot easier than people think. I better go next store and see if all the emoji masters have to say.

Congratulations. I have been retired exactly 2 months as of today. I can honestly say I have zero regrets in regard to retiring. It is a transition as I was putting in 50+ hours per week in a stressful position. I look forward to Monday’s now as everyone is back to work so the lakes and streams are less crowded. Keep busy and you will enjoy retirement. Again, congratulations.

I’ll be fine. Lakes less crowded same as the woods.my issue will be keeping my self occupied and not driving my wife crazy. whistling

sure seems like they hold employers to more stringent rules than they do themselves.

sure it is. I can go back to the shop I came from. That after 13 1/2 years. I would keep my senority, which would #2 from the top and be paid at the accpliable wage rate.

You have to search hard to find a retired union building tradesman who put in 30 or 40 years who has a complaint. I sure don’t. 40 years in the UBC and my last local was 930 out of St Cloud.

Boy, only 13 1/2 years employment and that makes him #2 in the union and can retire very comfortably?

Why doesn’t a caveman join the union? smirk

Heck why doesn’t everyone join the union? coffee

Heck why didn’t I stay the union? bawling

Why did they push you out a year earlier than you wanted? That doesn’t seem fair.

rotflol I was a rep out of the hall for those 13 1/2 years. I spent 28 years before that welding stainless in a union shop.
I was pushed due to financial reasons.

That happens with most changes that we don’t have any control of. It is best to focus on what you do have control of and what you want to do going forward. Most of the time things aren’t as bad as they first seem to be. Good luck.

I left my union job after 13 years in 2002. In the last 18 years, after Guv’ner Walker ended the union, the wage went up about a dollar an hour. What I mean is that over 18 years, the wage only went up a dollar. Maybe a bit less. Now they have trouble getting and keeping qualified employees. The ones who stay can’t get a job anywhere else.

If the finances look good? Go for it! You can always pick up some new hobbies to stay busy. Maybe the brewery in town needs more taste testers!

I would have been nice to go out on your own terms but don’t let that sour you. I have a friend of the age of 87 years old still doing what he can do for his beliefs.

    Glenn,
I’ve seen the UBC district council add years of service as a BA to older BAs who they let go for district council “reasons” & thus avoid a possible lawsuit. I don’t know how it works with your international but the UBC international has a pension above and beyond the district council pensions. It is something around 5 yrs to vesting & then $100/ mo for years of service.
Are you UA or an industrial union?

vacation……..whats that. doah I had 5 weeks a year when I left the shop to work for the local…….although the boss was pretty good about time away……….as long as we did our job. even when we where out that damn cell phone still rang, texts, and friggin emails……I wont miss that. waytogo

he made reference to hiring me as a consultant, but not sure if i’m willing. he wants me to retire…..so i’ll retire and find something different if I choose. he handed over all my shops to some of the field reps……….that’s like comparing apples to oranges…….. good luck to them.

Glen, I get the feeling we are close in age. I was 42 years in my industry. 24 hrs/day 365 days a year. If I ever get bored enough to go back to work it will be a job with zero responsibility. I sleep soooo much better now. Welcome to the gag, you will be just fine.
