Does anybody have any current reports from the big pond? I know all the walleyes are still out there, due to regulations ????

The bite remains strong! Even last weekend with the rain and cold fronts conditions blowing in fish were still on the chew.

Most every team bagging a 5 fish CPR limit.
Congrats to my friends Josh and Chris who put together back to back wins on their home water! Way to go guys.
For me, I’m getting fish just about everywhere I drop a line. (East side Big Point area) Even shoreline stuff right off the dock. Best approach for daytime fish is rigging leeches off first break drop offs in that 18-22 foot of water. Fun fishing right now, I really like a good rigging bite!
Looking forward to having next week off. The smallie bite should be going good too. Just have not spent any time chasing them yet this year.
Good luck!

I had the same results as Jon in the same area. Super fun bite. The smallies were a little slower for me with the cool down, but I really didn’t try for them very much. I’ll be back up tomorrow night for a nice long 4 day weekend

Thanks Jon! Do you know if the scale the MTT uses (ie a 28″ fish weighs x, or a 25″ fish weighs y) is available online? Just curious.
I can’t wait to get out on the big pond!
Not sure about the MTT chart. Pretty sure it is very similar to if not the same as the AIM Chart shown here.

The scale is not published anywhere as far as I know but it’s MUCH more realistic than AIM, a 27 inch fish is 7 pounds even on the MTT scale to give you an idea. That same fish is 8.10 on AIM’s conversion.
Its not the big mayfly hatch. This one is the smaller fish fly hatch. But yes in full swing the last few days.

Thanks. Heading up tonight but based on the wind forecast, the direction the bugs will end up, the Mrs. is probably staying home.
I was up on Tuesday, just for the afternoon evening. We caught 20 or so walleyes fishing for bass and only 6 bass. Every walleye was over 20″ so it was still a lot of fun. All fish came in less than 10 feet on tubes and swim baits. Surprisingly enough the tube was the best bait for the walleyes. Of course I didn’t throw any walleye plastics as I was trying to catch bass.
I don’t know that i’ve really heard a bad walleye report out there yet this year.
Live BUG REPORT here, LOL! Thank you SteveFellegy

Yeah, it was a pretty bad hatch of the fish flies. I actually think there were multiple hatches.
I was up Thursday night and the fishing was on fire. Everywhere I went the walleyes were putting on the feed bag. Then it got real slow on Friday, had to work for the fish. Next thing I know there are fish flies everywhere. That explains that.
The fishing was still decent for walleyes, 25 to 26 inch fish were very common, like the one in this picture. Bass on the other hand were not so active. I think the cool water(52-56 degrees) is keeping them in deeper water, but they are staging outside of the bedding areas. I found most bass in 10-16′ of water and caught mostly smaller males in the 12-15″ range.
The southern rocks were on fire and the flies were non-existent over the rocks.
Three hours Saturday night two guys in the boat and we boated 5 over 25″ plus a bunch of smaller bonus fish.
I was happy to see a 12″ fish. Only saw one but it gives me hope that there are younger year classes behind the big ones.
Man those fish are skinny… Especially Kyhls fish. I have saw alot of photos of 22″ plus fish looking very thin this year. I hope they aren’t starving due to lack of bait again like a few years ago. Maybe the theory is correct.. that huge year class is eating everything up. Hope the big fish start gorging on the bug hatches soon. I was impressed with condition of the fish this winter, so I hope they start to bulk up.

Yeah, I caught a bunch this weekend and most of the bigger fish were skinny. The one in my pic is pretty healthy though. I think the big females are just now starting to strap on the feed bag after the spawn, they should bulk up in a week or two. There are tons of minnows in the shallows.
I caught eyes from 12-26″ and everywhere in between. Only a few in the 12-14″ range, but they are there. Seems to be quite a few in the 16-20″ range also and those fish look really healthy.
Like Sticker, I’m also leery of seeing skinny fish on ML again but am waiting a couple more weeks to see if they fill out some, post spawn.
If anything, the stocking they plan to do this year should keep them fed later in the year.
Fished Saturday most of the day. Fished 4 to 12 feet deep in the sand weeds and rocks. Everywhere I went I caught walleyes. Did well on smallmouth but caught 3 times as many walleyes. Lots of smallmouth following hooked walleyes to the boat. All fish on artificial baits casting.
Fishing saturday was phenomenal, caught walleyes from 10′-24′ on anything from tubes, mooneye jigs with a plastic tail, and even spent an hour just using crawlers. Didnt catch a ton of smallmouth but the 6 we did catch were all over 18″, biggest being a 21.5″ 6.5lb pig. All the fishing we did was at various locations on the north end.
