Just got back from our 7 day Canada trip on Sat. and thought I’d post a quick recap of the trip with some Pictures. Overall the trip went GREAT. We started out the trip with a slight issue at the border crossing. We both got selected for a random covid test ( Just my luck ) I will not go into much detail on it, but lets say it was not a smooth process. Rest of the drive up went real well. Made a stop at the last Gas station prior to out campground in Grand Rapids ( Manitoba ) Filled up the Suburban ( Tank was almost empty ) topped off the boat ( About 8 Gallons ) and filled up 4 gas cans ( 6 gallons each ) total cost 458 Canada $
( Ouch ) Campsite was less full than Normal – Probably 10-12 Groups. Overall the fishing was Great. Mother nature continued to not bless me this season. We had more wind that we would have liked most days. Did Well on Lake Trout as they were still shallow. Water Temps were in the low to mid 50’s on the main lake and as warm as mids 60’s in some of the bays. I think we ended up with like 15 lake trout total ( all in the 7-10 Lb. range ) we had plans to fish them a lot more but the wind made it difficult most days to fish the areas they were in. BIG pike fishing was a little tougher than normal. We only ended up with 7 fish over 40″. caught good #’s of fish in the 34-38″ range. Think we caught the pike in a post spawn funk. There were still a few fish in the shallow bays but not as many as in the past. The fish had not showed up at some of the normal post spawn locations yet ( Or if they had they were not feeding well yet ) I think a week earlier or a week later would have been much better. The Walleye fishing was INCREDIBLE. By far the best walleye fishing we have ever had there or any other place for that matter. My guess is we caught over 500 fish for the trip and I believe the average overall size was in the 22-23″ range. Just a ton of fish in the 25-27″ size. I lost what by far would have been my Largest walleye right at the boat. It took me about 3-5 minutes of fighting it to determine what it was. As soon as I realized what and how big it was I turned to my partner to tell him I wanted the net on this one, He hooked into a big fish of his own ( a 37″ pike on light spinning gear ) Just as he fished releasing his fish mine popped off. That long on a barbless hooks I think just opened up a big enough hole in its mouth and allowed it to get off. I truly believe it was Over 30″ – My guess was closer to 32″. That one hurt. I really wanted a picture of it. Oh well maybe nest time. We had 4 different spots where we could pull up to the waypoint and hit spot lock and catch 40-50 walleyes without moving. It was just crazy. We found a larger bay ( 6 ft max depth ) Just loaded with larger walleyes mixed in with nice pike. We just drifted across different parts of the bay while casting with lipless crankbaits and Jerk baits and just pounded the fish. Only had 1 day with Rainy weather. Overall the temps were rather cool during the night ( Mid to upper 40’s ) daytime temps were in the upper 50’s to upper 60’s. Overall it was a really enjoyable trip. Here are a few Photos.
