Replacing Trailer Bunks

I know there have been several threads on the topic but didn’t see this specific question…was wondering as far as lag bolts go, any tricks for getting them to not back out of the boards over time? Like a Loctite type of product? Use a lock washer? Just trying to plan this job out a bit as it’ll be my first time. And no, I’m not going with synthetic boards…it’s an older trailer and I could see myself getting something new in 5 years or so.

I’ve never had an issue…maybe twice a year during the week with nobody around I’ll tie off the boat and give the trailer a 3 minute once over and be sure the bunks look decent with nothing loose or torn.

I have had this boat since 2013 and have replaced the bunks once. My guess is if hardware is pulling free it’s time to look at replacing the bunks completely.

Just use what’s on there now, guessing its still working why mess with it. Drop boat in water, Have the new boards cut to length and half carpeted, that way you can drill the leg boat holes in the boards where they need to be, then wrap the rest and staple the carpet, leaving the bottom of the boards showing so the carpet does not hold water and rot the boards. We just did this on the neighbors Lund boat trailer. We used Douglas fir 2×6 from HD and carpet from Amazon.

What I did last time is counter sink the bolt so you can drop a washer in the hole stick the bolt through and on the bottom side another washer and lock nut it, then carpet over it. That was you should not have to worry about them coming loose. Did this after dang near loosing a bunk on west rush. If the wind had been coming from the other way it would have been a real tough spot with only one bunk, found it floating next to shore at the launch.
