Release the pout back in the lake!

I would like to get a shout out to all the Mille Lacs Lake fisherman to please release the pout that are being caught. If you don’t plan to eat the fish, release it back into the lake. Eelpout are bottom feeders and are good for the lake. They are also good feed for the big predator fish in the lake.

Spread the word! “release the pout”!

    Thank you

I’m with ya JD! I’d eat a pout before a walleye any day!

ANY fish not being kept to eat should be released.

Great post…Funny how the mentality on Mille Lacs has changed on that subject. Back when dad had a house on Mille Lacs in the mid 70’s I would run around with my sled (7 years old…) and collect all the frozen pout’ next to houses and build a small fort with them! I have a picture of me next to what must be 300 of them. Fresh water cod. They really are delicious…RR

It might also be helpful to the lake if we start leaving the big eyes on the ice.

Upper Midwest “eelpout” are not “lingcod”. They are however a member of the cod family (90% sure of that…). Lingcod is what is caught for lutefisk. I work for a Company that makes 1,000’s of lbs of lutefisk a year and we buy dried lingcod from Norway that we soak and make our lutefisk…RR

    poop fish
    Ewww

Many different names for a very good tasting fish.

After checking, Lingcod is a saltwater fish.

I used to get disgusted the few times I ice fished the big lake and people would have big pout stuck in the ice like mailbox posts.
