This is really interesting. Especially for the Escalade since it runs in 4 cyl mode when not under load. Also the 3.5 Ecoboost saw gains when under load.

I might be filling up with premium next time I’m pulling the boat.

I have a Expedition EL with the 3.5 Eco boost. My manual says to use high octane when trailering for a distance. As a result I’m probably always running a mix of octanes.

Use what the manual says. It’s that simple. They tested and designed it for a specific octane.

I never saw that in mine. I’ll have to go back and look. I know it said to use minimum of 87 but didn’t know it recommended higher octane for towing.

The economy difference is minimal. The premium will have better detergents to keep the fuel system cleaner. Engines with direct injection i would recommend using premium every other or every third tank to maintain a cleaner fuel system. Just my opinion

My Audi says to run 91. I am sure due to the turbo. I have never run anything other than 91. The AWD A4 would run 35 MPG in the summer on the highway if you stayed between 70-75mph. Best that ran was 37 driving 65 mph. 80 would drop to 33 MPG. The Q5 runs about 29 MPG @ 75 mph.

Any gas with ethanol in it will get less mpg than 100% gasoline regardless of octane rating.

As long as it doesn’t ping, I’m satisfied.
