I’m think of buying a used boat from Wisconsin but I’m from mn and will only ever use it in mn and on the Mississippi. Does anyone know what I need to do to get it registered in mn? It’s my first boat too by the way. Thanks all!,

Just call the nearest Driver and Vehicle Service office location. They can help you out.

    There will be two transactions.

    1. Transfer title on boat with DNR.

    2. Transfer title on trailer with DMV.

    Need more info.

Are you buying from a private party? Do they own the boat or does a bank hold title?

Are you buying from a dealer?

Buying from a private party, they have the title. It’s just a 16 foot Jon boat too if that helps. Thanks

Good to know on the title for the boat. Bring that and a signed bill of sale to the DNR office. (You can google and print one off the internet) Make sure it has the Hull ID number and current tab numbers on the bill of sale. They will transfer ownership to you and give you MN boat sticker. You will need to put new numbers on the boat. (No Tax on the boat transfer. Just fees.)

For the trailer. Get the seller to sign a separate bill of sale. Get the trailer registration from the seller if available. Take it to the DMV. Start there. They may want other info. But typically on small boat trailers I just tell the DMV it was home made and no VIN number. Paid $100 for it. (Tax will be based off the price paid. No need to tell them it came with a boat.) Then you will get a Mn Perm trailer sticker good for life.

    Good Luck!
