Refillable 1# tanks

The tank will be screwed on horizontally and needs to be vertical in order for the vent to work that lets the air escape when filling. So I won’t do it.

If anyone wants any, the Flame King ones are on a great sale from their website.

Normally over $100 for the 4 pack with caps you can get it for $59.

I just ordered them last week.

Can you refill these with those cheapo refill adapters you can get off Amazon?

    I believe so.

I ordered the Flame King brand so they should be compatible.

Apparently the Flame Keg ones must use the Flame Keg tanks.

Here’s another update on the Fuel Keg. 15% off at Menards right now. I think these are going to work well, but some further testing is needed.

What do you recommend, the Flame King or the Flame Keg?

Bought a few of these after using 16 of the little green ones in a 3 days span . Having trouble getting mine to fill – can hear propane go in them quick at first but then it sounds like a trickle at the end . Purge valves open but no liquid coming out . At first I didn’t have the valve fully open but now I’m certain I do . A burst of air comes out but that’s it . Have watched the video and looks very straight forward . Set a timer and reached the 2 minute mark and nothing coming out the purge valve . Tank does have some liquid in it . Anyone else ?

What tanks are you filling ?
    How full is your 20 # ?
    Is it upside down ?

I only use Flame King and never had a problem.

Mr Heater – brand new 20 lb tank upside down . Maybe I need to be more patient but I set my phone timer for 2 minutes

You should be hearing air (propane) vent out the entire time of fill – is that happening?

No I have 3 tanks and none of them are venting air . I’m going to try a different grill propane tank tomorrow. . Went back out and messed with it and no go . Even tightened one tank with a wrench . Yes the pins are lined upb. Negative .

Not being a smartazz, but is the 20lb tank open? Sounds like when you bleed the 1lb, all that comes out is the pressure in the 1lb’er, and nothing is pushing in from the 20.

So it seems like it’s not getting liquid from the 20 into the 1, or it is not venting as it should. But you knew that.

What is the chance there is water somewhere? Either snow got in a valve melted and froze, or albeit less likely, water in the 20lb tank freezing on its way to the 1?

Yep it’s open – you hit the lever with a tank off she dumps propane out lol . Went to try another 20 lb tank different brand .. got one to fill as it should . The other two . Negative . Not impressed . Either I have a bad fill valve or 2 bad tanks. I wouldn’t think I would have to crank it down super tight with a wrench but maybe I do . I legit can’t think of a reason one filled and the other two didn’t other than poor machine tolerances in the filling mechanism or tanks not allowing it to let fuel in .

Read some Amazon reviews today . Many have the same issues . Wonder if Menards will return them .

    Just an FYI:

You need the Fuel Keg filler valve to fill the Fuel Keg tanks
You need the Flame King filler valve to fill the Flame King Tanks

Nothing is compatible with each other and everything is proprietary.

Also double check any and all tanks have the plastic sleeve and o ring in the tank valve/top.

Everything I’m using is Mr heater fuel kegs and their branded refill kit. The only thing I’ve changed is full 20’lbs tanks from Kwik star to blue rhino . I do see that sleeve in there . I had one come out and tapped it back into place with a punch . .

ISUANdy, I had the same dang problem with the Flame King tanks. I was able to get one to fill and the other 3 will not fill. Contacted the company and they sent me out some new orings and a sleave thing which is a total PITA to get out and that didnt do anything. I gave up trying to fill them and everything is just sitting on my shelf now.

for the people having problems with filling the flame king tanks are you making sure the notch on the filler is lining up with the notch on the tanks? if you dont do that then they will not fill. ive never had a issue with all 6 of my tanks and ive filled them all many times but you have to make sure the things are lined up.

as far as the fuel keg problems i cant help with that as ive never used those

Hmmm, previously I had purchased a generic filler hose from Amazon and some time later purchased a couple of Flame King refillable 1 lb tanks (from Menards) not long before Mr. Heater came out with the Fuel Keg.

Filling them worked great, much much better than refilling the disposable tanks. I recently purchased a couple more Flame King tanks (from Scheels) and they filled as great as the previous Flame King tanks with my generic filler hose.

I am not sure of the discussion of the requirement of using a proprietary Flame King hose for filling but I am curious.

I have done just about everything to make sure everything is lined up right and I know it is but it doesn’t work for some of the tanks. I filled 1 maybe 2 without much issue now I try to refill them and they don’t work. Flame king is what I have.

I wonder if the Flame King valve is not on tight enough to the 20lb tank or is froze up a bit. I would take the 20lb into the house for a day and then give it a try.

This is what I’m using for my Flame Kimg tanks. I have 8 tanks and no issues.

X2. I also use the that same filler with my Flame King tanks with no issues.

Called MR Heater today. Sending me two new fuel kegs free of charge for the bad ones I got. Cant complain about that , however the best customer service is the one you never use !

I have a couple of those empty small green ones. I’m having trouble finding a way to dispose or get rid of them. Any ideas? I don’t think they are the refillable versions. They are the small dark green Coleman ones.

The Hennepin county recycling and hazardous waste place by me takes them. They won’t take 20lb tanks though, I want to know how to get rid of those.

Forgot you’re in Plymouth, it’s the one in Brooklyn Park on Jefferson. It’s free for those.

I wonder if a metal recycling place would take the 20 pounders? Northern Metal Recycling in St Cloud takes about anything just dump it off. Appliances, AC units etc if its metal or has copper/gold in its circuitry its recyclable.

I bet they would take a 20# if the valve was removed or the tank had a hole drilled into it.

20 pounder – The place that I normally have them filled at seemed content on taking off of my hands the last 20 lb tank that I had which was expired.

For what it’s worth – Ran the 2 that wouldn’t fill out of fuel to zero pressure – one refilled like it should the other did not .
