I SEE ALOT OF PICS OF WHAT LOOKS LIKE PLAIN JANE ELECTRICAL TAPE BUT I DONT WANT THE STICKY GUMMY RESIDUE THAT COMES ALONG WITH IT. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS USING?? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Put Masking tape down on the cork before the electrical tape. I also use sand paper each off season to sand down the cork to make it smooth each season. That way its almost like getting a new rod each year……almost

Look up a silicone wrap. 3M makes one that they sell and duck brand has a silicone repair-wrap for pipes they sell at Menards. They are all self adhering, meaning they only adhere to themselves. If you fish more than most, you should replace after each season, it can get brittle and rip. I have never had reel or handle issues with this stuff.

Clam makes a knockoff and X-treme tape also makes some. X-treme is the original manufacturer of the stuff. Works wonders.

Use a good quality electrical tape such as 3M and you won’t have a sticky gummy residue.

    Yup.

I’ll add, just cleaned up some very old rods with just simple cleaner and the scrub side of a dish washer pad. Next time you’re gonna throw one out just throw it in the toolbox for a once a year scrub.

Nhamm- try Bonami cleaner or the stove top cleaner with the eggshell on it green metallic label. That will clean cork really well. (I have not idea what it is called though)

I really like self adhesive electrical tape too.

I use sports tape. It works great and lasts for a long time without coming loose.

I have always used friction tape. It doesn’t have any adhesive on it and it only sticks to itself. After removing the reel at the end of the season, I don’t see anything left on the cork. Only $3.

X2 but I use painters tape as my base with duct tape to attach reel, works like a charm.

I just put a single wrap of electrical tape down first, sticky side out. Then about 3 wraps around the reel feet to secure it down over the sticky side. No sticky stuff on the cork/eva and by putting down the first wrap, the reel feet have something to grip to while you are trying to wrap your reel down in the right spot and lined up with your guides.

You could even use zip-ties like how combos usually come.

Castration bands are what I use. Got the idea from a buddy and it works great!

It’s sobering to think about what they’re used for when trying to get them on the handle but they work perfectly )

Cold snaps are castration bands with a different name. I used castration bands for years as my local bait shop used them to tie minnow bags. Ditched the idea once it started to grove my handles.

I went away from the bands, because even with 4 of them on, if you hook into a bigger fish, they seem to flex

Clam Reel Wrap is absolutely the best I have used. It’s rubberish, and sticks to itself when pulled tight. It leaves no marks on the rod and cuts off very easily with scissors. One roll will easily do 10 rods, probably more. I found mine last year at Fleet Farm.

I dislike the cold snap reel bands as well. I get a good roll of electrical tape. For the first wraps i cut 4 inch sections and put a wrap on upside down (sticky side up). Then i put the reel on and do my normal wraps. By having the sticky side up for the first section it keeps the reel where you want it, for the most part, when you are attaching your reels. It also keeps from leaving the sticky residue when you take the tape off at the end of the season.

I prefer the extra “ribbed” grip you get from the Cold Snap bands.

Nope, not touching that one. Don’t think JD Winston would either.
