We’d like to welcome everyone to our new Red River forum as well as extend a warm welcome to Dennis Flom, who will be moderating for us.

    Some background on Dennis….

Dennis has been an avid fisherman his entire life. Once a very successful tournament walleye fisherman, Dennis now sets his sights, most of the year, on catfish. Dennis owns and operates Catfish Unlimited Guide Service of Harwood, ND. Dennis considers himself a catfish specialist and fishes for them more than 120 days a year.

Dennis’s homewater is, of coarse, the Red River. Dennis has fished the Red from it’s headwaters in Whapeton-Breckenridge to north of Selkirk in Manitoba and everywhere in-between.

Dennis has, and continues to be, very active in youth fishing projects. He is a volunteer with the ND Game & Fish Dept. and also teaches an adult education class on river fishing. In 2001, Dennis received the Education Award from Riverkeepers for his teaching on fishing the Red River. Dennis has been featured quite regularly in the local media in the Fargo area.

Dennis and his very understanding wife, Stanna with their two children,Tanner 9, Taylin 4, live on the banks of the Sheyenne River close to where it enters the Red River about 10 miles north of Fargo, ND.

Do 30# channel cats get your blood boiling?

If they do, the Red River is the place to find them! And in numbers too!

Welcome Dennis. We’re looking forward to learning about the Red River and sharing a ton of info about this great resource in this new forum.

    Good fishin’,

Hey Dennis, welcome aboard! It’s great to see a Red River forum. I’ll be heading up to Selkirk from Mpls. on May 16th to fish for those monster cats. How are the river levels looking? Any high water this spring? Thanks, Vern

The Red has had very little runoff this year. Fishing up at Selkirk should be excellent this spring! No high water to contend with.

Are you going to be staying at Stu’s Resort? I have a good freind who will be there at that time.

I do love to go up there myself. I guide for catfish around the Fargo area but when I get a chance I make a run north. Where else can you go and when you return, tell everybody that you caught a “TON” of fish and not be exaggerating.

    Good luck up north!

Hey Dennis, thanks for the info! We’ll be launching out of Stu’s, but probably camping in town somewhere. Hopefully, we’ll catch some goldeye off of Stu’s dock. Having to catch our own bait was actually pretty fun too. Vern

    Vern,

A good bait to bring up there from the states is freshly killed, as you can not bring them live into Canada, suckers. I will stop by my favorite baitshop right before I leave and buy the biggest sucker minnows they have. I will then put them on ice and keep them that way until I will use them. Do not let them soak in the water in the bottom of the cooler though. They will last about three days this way. Suckers can be better than goldeyes at times.

I wish I was going with you!

    Dennis

Thanks Dennis, great idea. I was up there for the first time 2 years ago & was surprised to find that Stu didn’t have any kind of cut-bait for sale. I just figured that there would be some bait nearby. So I spent the 1st 45 minutes fishing for goldeye without a bite. It was a little frustrating watching other boats land big cats while we searched for bait. We finally caught a bunch & it was kind of fun, but we plan on bringing our own this time. After 8 hours of driving, you can’t waste time searching for bait. Thanks again, Vern
