Red Tide

With all the moving I have been on like a 2 month hiatus from fishing, Now that we are more settled in I planned on hitting some shore spots I scouted to see how the fishing is around me.

Unfortunately, I stepped outside at noon and smelled a faint smell I can only describe as a pile of dog doo doo that had been sitting in the sun. As I drove a few blocks and the smell did not dissipate, I realized that the red tide or the affects of red tide had moved into the area.

I am about 1 mile from Terra Ceia Bay and 4 miles from where I planned on fishing. I was hoping to go Sunday, but its not looking good. We won’t be getting east winds until Saturday.

    What a bummer.

Sister had plans to take her family, some island off the FL coast this October. The rental guy was nice enough to ask if they have heard about the Red Tide. They are going to San Diego instead.

Red tide is some nasty stuff. It happened when my brother was living down there. It’s terrible to see all the dead fish, but kinda cool for a MN guy to see really how diverse the ocean is.

Not a lot of fresh water near me and I’m waiting until November when the bite is better.

My wife and I were planning on taking a trip to the Destin or Tampa area in September but that has us looking at the east side of the state.

It’d be nice to be able to predict it way into the future. A lot of service industries are going to be hurting down here even if it is just a scare. It’s very unpredictable.

I don’t even smell it anymore, so whatever I smelled has moved on.

The red tide is a pretty crazy phenomenon. The alga is a natural thing but the science is says all the fertilizers and chemicals from us are causing it to basically multiply and be on steroids. Hope all gets better for you guys down there

That would surely kill any red tide.

I know it seems logical to blame man introduced nutrients, but I caution people throwing the blame for feeding the problem.

I’ve been reading up on it and many of the scientists taking the lead on the issue say they aren’t sure.

The reason for caution is we don’t want to chase the wrong ball.

In any event, man made nutrients are the problem with the green algae problem we have. So it needs to be addressed regardless of if it needs the red tide once it gets inshore.

I do wonder if Irma has caused this one to linger, be it flushing nutrients, changing currents for a period of time, whatever.

The smell must have just been some dead fish from the red tide that temporarily had blown into the area. I managed a Jack Cravalle and under slot sea trout.

Nice! So you think that Red Tide is gone already?

No, the ride tide is alive and well. Where we are is inside Tampa Bay and it really hasn’t reached here, although I believe they have reported it north of Tampa Bay too now.

I haven’t checked the weekly report. If you want to monitor it you can search myfwc redtide for the FWC redtide weekly report if you are concerned about coming to Tampa.

From what I read, it peaks in October/Nov. It’s not going away anytime soon. I’d be more concerned if you were looking at visiting anywhere from South Tampa Bay(Anna Maria Island) south.

One of our favorite places is Clearwater Beach as I have family in Dunedin, but I’d think that would be in the “Tide”. We will probably end up going to the Atlantic side…..Thanks for the link!

    That’s probably a safe bet.

We are currently in a late summer pattern where we get easterly winds blowing every day, so I hope everything starts getting pushed of the coast.
