Does anyone here ice fish the red? I keep hearing what an amazing walleye fishery it is but have no clue where to start. I can catch them in the spring summer and fall but I’ve never ice fished it but am going to give it a go tonight!

Depending on where you are on the river, bring some orange cones.
A friend had his hub shelter ran into because a nutcase on a snowmobile came around a corner at 50MPH and didnt see it until it was too late. Luckily no one hurt bad, throw a couple cones around if you have a blind corner.I have fished a few areas north of the bridge at Hendrum and Halstad, you almost need to go out in the summer/fall, run sidescan find the holes and then mark them on GPS. Finding structure on the ice is almost impossible on that river.
With that said, there are some beautiful walleye on the river if you can find them. Also you might hook into one heck of a nice Channel Cat up that way.

I tried it tonight, it’s difficult getting used to fishing in the current when I almost exclusively fish lakes with no current. But I always welcome a new challenge, and the best part about it is that it’s only a few miles away! Skunked tonight, but I learned a lot.

That’s actually right where I started tonight. Just north of Johnson Park, man the current was moving tonight. I was surprised to see how clear the river was. I usually drill a bunch of holes, but tonight I was a lot slower on the auger not knowing the river well and the ice conditions.

However if your not on the ND ice fishing page on Facebook go like it and ask for some tips or safety advice. There’s a few that fish it here regularly that will give some safety advice.

Thanks Andrew, I didn’t even think to ask there for some reason! I’ll reach out and see if anyone there has any tips for me.
January 16, 2019 at 12:24 pm #1826526I live on the red and fish it almost every week day after school. Tons of walleye and sauger, nice big ones too. Be careful, watch for pressure ridges and splits that form. Don’t walk somewhere that you haven’t checked out first for ice thickness. I won’t tell you any of my spots, it would suck if too many people fished them, but I will tell you to fish bends. Good luck, remember to release the big ones!
