Red Lesions on Crappies

I’ve seen this for as long as I remember on the lakes I grew up around, but recently noticed a sign up bringing it to the attention of anglers.

Do any of you have any information about Black Crappie Sarcoma? Or have seen it before?

From what I’ve found it’s pretty isolated to NW Wisconsin, and little is known about it.

I saw a lesion on a crappie from a Burnett county, WI lake a couple years ago, but I assumed, and it may have been, that it was from a lamprey that had detached. It was around the diameter of a quarter, which I thought was large for a lamprey, but I have never heard of Black Crappie Sarcoma. I’ll have to keep a watch out.

Dermal sarcoma is basically fish acne. Harmless skin disease they get during spawn. The greenbacks up here have them all the time.

Catch crappies ice fishing that have these. Not all have it the real bad ones I throw back and cut around ones that I don’t like the looks of. This in Polk county in NW WI
