Red Lake Snow Pack

    Hey all,
I am heading to Red out of West Winds this weekend. We are staying in a sleeper and we would like to be mobile during the day. Does anyone have any reports of how possible it is to move around on the lake? Are people stuck to just the roads, or can you blaze your own path? We will be in a full size pickup with 4 wheel drive.
    Thanks,
    Dan

I was up there from Saturday till Sunday. We pulled an 8 x 17 wheelhouse all around the lake. We followed another buddy in his truck who drove first to create a trail. Never got stuck an we put over 10 miles on and off road. Bring a tow rope as there are some deeper areas of snow. Snow average was around 6 to 8″.

I’m not sure where all of these “slow” reports are coming from? I’ve had friends and family going out of JR’s all year and doing very well. Last weekend my buddy had 75 for his house Fri-Sun morning. They didn’t try very hard either. 75 isn’t slow to me.

As for snow it’d be nice to have two vehicles and a tow rope. There always seems to be that one drift that gets ya.

No issues at all getting around w/ 4wheel drive truck last weekend…(Psst…I set up in 14.5fow approximately 3/4-1 mile East of center bar all by myself (well there were 6 of us…) and we caught our limit of 15″-19″ fish from 11am-5pm Saturday. Fish were killing jig poles and we even through in 2 elusive yet still catchable Red Lake crappies in the mix too!) Good luck. I am jealous…RR

Good question, I’m one of the slow reports. Also heard the DNR checked 250 houses last Saturday. Only 3 had a limit and many were doing extremely poor. We had some friends on the lake. They started 4pm Friday and on Saturday afternoon they had 15 fish for 10 guys.

Pat that’s too bad… all I know is they were out in the middle by themselves.

My family was up over new years and they had around 60 people total (many very inexperienced). They had 60 limits in less than 2 hours. Some of the guys caught and released 10-20 fish in that time period as well. Jr’s had a two hour wait to fry fish most of that weekend.

The fish cleaning shack is always busy there too, all I can say is drive out of Jr’s and get away from the crowds.

It hasn’t mattered what you use for bait either. They said every jig they had down got hit regularly.

I’ll have to let me buddies know they rocked it then. I hope it turns around for everyone!

We were off SW of the Center Bar and it was pretty slow in my house. Good advise on the travel, make sure there are 2 of you as I had to be pulled after going off the trail. I really have a heavy house however. Interesting as I got set up a warden knocked on my door, I let him in. No poles were down so he checked my license. I asked him if he writes a lot of tickets, he smiled and said more than you’d think. Young guy and was nice. Our group got enough for a decent fish fry Saturday afternoon in JR’s. Missed a few but I have yet to do well this year. Of course that is just the bonus!

Last week we’d afternoon till Friday morning,10 walleye,8 jumbo perch,20 to 34 below. Maybe that was why it was slow,

I just got back a couple of hours ago. I was there Mon to Wed.
You should not have much of an issue getting around. It was getting pretty warm though, might get a little slushy.
I caught 25 walleyes or so out of Beacons Harbor. 3.7 miles out. 12 feet of water. Orange worked best, and dead stick minnow with florescent green hook. Best bite was 3:30PM to 5:30PM, slow after that. Early morning bite from 5:30 to 7 or so. Talked to few others, some did well and some didn’t catch much.
    Have a good time.

I just got back from JR’s and caught over 60 fish in one day. The trick for me was the slight breaks and staying away from the crowds. I was mobile with a snowmobile and fished mostly in 14ft of water.

We did one thing right and got far away from the crowds. From what I’m reading we were too shallow 9-10’ish.

Saturday I got motivated for about an hour to do a little hole hopping. No marks so I gave up.

Only flurry was 2am Saturday night when we called it a night. No sooner than we turned the lights off then we got multiple hits on the rattle reels. Wish we knew that sooner but beer and cards were ruling the day.

Either way it was a great time. Our group doesn’t get to see each other very often and that was the main point.

We had a super slow start to the trip. Two fish between the four of us. We are 4.5 miles out of westwind. We are in about 11′ right now. Going to head west and deeper this morning.
