Red Lake Report From Last Weekend

We caught fish at a decent rate on Saturday. Tons of shorts and a good amount in the 15-17 inch range. But we only saw 3 fish over 20 inches all weekend. The fun part was we found some crappies. All 12-14 inches and thick. They’d hit a rattle bait harder than any walleye. We went out of Beacon both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday was the Dead Sea and we went all the way up and down down the east side of the lake with not much luck. Deadstick did most of the damage like usual on Red. Overall a little slower than usual but still a better bite that staying in the metro.

Do you know the make or model of the rod holder you used for your deadstick? I like how it mounts to the hub.

It’s the rod holder that comes with the ClamLock mounting system. They are slick. If you have a hub they go right on the screw in the wall joint of your hub. They have all sorts of things that will mount to them.

Nice video mahto.I thought you had a rattle reel on the ceiling until you moved the camera and saw the rod.

Good info. I’ve been there twice this year and have seen the same thing. Lots of shorts means lots of eaters in the next few years!

Those rod holders work in other hub shacks or clam only

I think they work with other hubs as well. They slide right over the screw in the joint and come with a lock washer that holds the mount on. So as long as theres a screw there I would think it would work. They have rattle reels that mount to it as well as tables, tool holders, cup holders, etc.

Here’s a video showing them a little more. I think it’s a pretty slick system.

I like the idea if you anchor all the walls in your hub. one rogue gust of wind and you got a rod flyin past somebodys face.

nice to see those crappies again Mahto. i have never caught one out there and i put in some time back in the day.

Lately every report I see has been crappies. And our group caught a large handful as well, but we target a spot that has always given us a few. This year was just quite a few more then normal.

Oh how I would love for that lake to be a crappie Mecca again. Doubt it can sustain what it once did with they eyes in that lake. But when the crappies dwarf half the eyes in size that’s a destination in my book. Eyes on red are meh. Good time but the surprise of a biggin just isn’t ther like a red lake 15 inch pie.

I wouldn’t say we are anywhere near it being the mecca again (although that was before my time going up there). But it seemed like the northeast corner was where the crappie were being caught. I had multiple friends out in the southeast corner as well and they never saw a crappie.

On Saturday alone, we had a group of 5 out there and we had 13 crappies on the ice, all 12-14 inches.

In March ditch 5 is where I would crappie fish up there based on the tall tails from the Hillman family. That crappie boom was a perfect storm and will never happen again in my lifetime.

We caught quite a few crappies Monday-Wednesday. Biggest was 14.5″. First time ever catching crappies on red. Good to see.

Overall bite was steady but slow. Caught about 75 fish in 2.5 days between 4 guys

Oh trust me I know it is far from the hey days. Man was that a ball and would love to relive it again. Staring at a few photos from back then right now. Some of the funnest ice fishing memories I have.

Tell you what though, all the crappies we caught, even the 12s were built differently. Thick as hell and big time foreheads on them.

I miss the crappie hey days on Red. The size and the build of those fish were unique.
