aside from the situation with the couple going through the ice, are the resorts still allowing people to launch of on their roads? planning on going up this Saturday morning and any information regarding the ice conditions, how the bite is, and a good place to launch out of would be appreciated.

Sounds like the whole south side will be closed, and with the amount of open water in JR’s pics from the plane today, I would wait until it locks up.

If the wind changes and starts coming from the north it could change things quickly, like others have said, contact the resort, they will have the latest info.

The wind is predicted to be light and from the southern direction this weekend. Hopefully things settle in and finally lock up with the predicted lower temps. next week.

    Seriously?
If you are even considering going after what just happened up there followed by a week of mid 40’s I suggest staying home and reviewing your life insurance policy. Make a survival plan for your wife and kids after your income isn’t there any more.
Sorry if that comes across as to harsh and offends some here but as my dad always said…..”use that thing on your shoulders for something other than a hat rack.”

I’m pretty sure the 9-10 inches they had didn’t melt away on URL with the weather we had this week.

No the ice is just broken up on half the lake and floating around a huge portion of the lake that is no longer secure at all. If you want to bet your life the other half will stay locked up, so you can catch a few walleye’s good luck. And I’d advise listening to Dutch’s advice before heading up there. SMH

WARNING: ICE ON UPPER RED LAKE IS UNSAFE…
    CONDITIONS HAVE WORSENED WITH WIND/TEMPS…

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public stay off Upper Red Lake. Anyone attempting to go onto the ice does so at their own risk. This warning is due to extremely poor ice conditions that have developed and continue to worsen. In the past few days, the warm weather and high winds have caused the ice to break up. Photo’s posted today on the Facebook page of JR’s Corner Access on their Facebook page show that the lake has many large areas of open water and what ice is there, is very broken and mostly surrounded by open water.

    Please stay off the lake.

Wait one more week if you can. The fish will still be there. We had 7-9 last weekend and there were still ATVs going in all weekend to the east of where we were.

2.5 miles is a pretty big area. Weather looks decent.

If you drive North few hours you will find ice somewhere.
