Red Lake Bite Still Pretty Good

Ended up going up to Red over the weekend. I’ve only ever fished it early ice so we went out and found a spot away from everyone and hunkered down to stay out of the 30mph straight line winds. The bite wasn’t hot but we had fish moving through all day long and caught probably 30 walleye per day and a group and a lot of nice perch from 10-12 inches.

I’ve always heard it shuts off after the trucks and wheelers started going out but I’ll definitely be going up later in season again.

Nice gold eye! We caught one of those last year. Those things have some nasty teeth.

We caught 1 this year as well. I figured they would be awesome big pike bait.

Was up there 2 days in a rental mid-week and it was slow except for one afternoon. The rather brutal cold front seemed to impact the bite. Two fish first evening … slow most of the day next day … The resort owner warned us the two days prior had been extremely slow which seemed a bit strange based on weather …

A couple of people stopped by including the game warden. Local wheel house guy said it was slow. Warden said it was slow all over the lake …

We then caught over dozen walleyes that afternoon in a two hour period. Half on a vertical jig and the other half on hook and minnow. Interestingly it was pretty busy with people arriving and plows running when the fish came through and the bite was good.

Two of us brought home a half dozen that were 16.5s and 14s. Let go the rest that were all 11s. Also caught about a dozen 10″+ perch. Kept about half of those once we realized they were pretty nice …

Last morning was slow except for two big hits on a rattle wheel that were missed. sad

Talked to a group of six guys in Northome coming back from LOW. They had one good day in three. Last full day the six were skunked.

It definitely wasn’t hot, but steady, and we heard from most people we talked to that it was slow for them. We took the roads as far north as we could go and then snowmobiles another mile off the roads to get away from the crowds. Definitely helped.

Game warden stopped by in stealth mode. Licenses – check, fish … they are on the ice (only perch at the time – first keeper walleye after he left), eat fish on this trip – nope, how many lines down & can I see … 4 … yep take a look at anything you want.

Rather nice young man and I knew they worked URL hard … still surprising that I did not hear him drive up. Had not been checked by a warden in 14 years … last time was on Gull.
