Looking to head up too red lake today. Does anybody have ideas on how the ice is going to be for the next few days with it getting warmer? And any pointers on where to fish, I have never been up there before.

The forecasted high is at or below 32F for the next 10 days, so the ice will not deteriorate. For a first timer, follow the herd and set up a minimum of 100 yards from the nearest group. If fishing the south side, fish along the break. If no fish in 30 minutes of fishing your first series of holes, move down the break another 75+ yards and repeat the process until fish are found. Fishing the east side is similar but rather fishing a large flat than an obvious break. Keep punching holes until fish are found.

Good luck. I’ll be up for 4 days starting Sunday.

Talk to whatever place you go on at, they will have the most up to date info for you. I usually go thru JR’s. Jigging a Red Buckshot and red gamakatsu hook on the set line for starters. Sounds like the fishing is decent, but hasn’t really taken off like previous years yet. Let us know how you do!

Just got back a couple of hours ago from three days of fishing. This was our worst time of the past five years, but mainly because we weren’t staying on the ice. JR’s were taking out their houses yesterday and Up North were going to start tomorrow, out of Roger’s. It seems everyone said there was a hot bite about 7 AM and then about 3 PM in about the 7′ depth using red glow buckshots or similar with minnow head or whole minnow, both are short windows. We did our best with blue/chrome #4 & #5 rippin raps with no meat, they pretty much came in and hooked them selves as by the time you seen them on the locator your rod was bending, that was at 13′ out of JR’s.

Fished out of Beacon Harbor today and yesterday. First time on Red. 40 in a day and a half fishing. Set lines with medium shiners on plain hook saved the trip. A handfull on jigging raps. Fished all along the outer edge of the shacks farthest out in about 11-12 ft. Fish would come and go throughout the day. Good luck. 8″ of ice and great snow cover. I wouldn’t think ice should be a problem.

I’m at a private cabin about 1 mile east of Roger’s. We are running portables and ATV/UTV’s.

We won’t be up until January 6-10, we have a 6-man house booked with PortAvilla. I’ve found that Roger’s, JR’s Corner, and PortAvilla have been doing a pretty good job of keeping everyone posted on their Facebook pages. Who does everyone recommend for bait/tackle in the area? This is my first trip to URL, so any help is greatly appreciated. We have 3 guys coming, all of us have wheelers and portables to bring out as well. I just finished assembling my new Otter XT Pro Lodge, and my stepdad bought a new Frabill Insulated shack well.

Jr’s had awesome bait last week. I got a mix of nice rainbows and fatheads for $5.

JR’s is really on top of updating their areas ice conditions on their website and on Facebook “JR’s Corner Access”. Is will really be building this week for sure with the temps dropping late in the evenings through the night and subtle winds.
