to those who say “this is the dems” or “thanks Walz”, consider this: there are 67 different mn house members who can make up almost anything they want and call it a bill. The recent White Earth land grab bill was tabled after last week’s hearing, which means it is not at all likely to get a vote by committee deadline (3/22), Many of the opposing voices, including my representative, ARE DEMOCRATS. This bill is up against the same deadline, and it will end up in the same place as the White Earth land grab bill, the trashcan.

    I agree in part.

However, this isn’t just going to go away. It will be revisited and proposed repeatedly until it’s attached with some other spending proposal/legislative change that entices more people on the fence to get on board. This is likely just a “feeler” to see where support lies and a more driven effort will follow in future sessions.

You are correct sir!!! ( said in my best Ed McMAHON VOICE)

Yea maybe I worded it too softly.

Dems constantly drive race division and at the same time call everything racist. Unfortunately way too many can’t see them for their hypocrisy.

I received an email back from my state senator Jeff Howe. He’s on our side waytogo

And while I was at it I threw My 2 cents worth about the wolves. Again on our side.

As I’m sure you guys are already aware, the metro area pretty much holds all the voting power in the state. It really is about the only blue in the state as the rest of the state is pretty much all red.

Hit up all your buddies in the metro and get them to convert and pass it along.

I would love to see this state flip to Red.

When the state elected the lieutenant governor I said there’d be some butthurt to go around.

These ideas have been around for awhile, the libbies just didn’t think it’d have a chance in heck so why write it up. Now with her co captaining the MN ship, well, here we go.

I’m pretty convinced when it comes to most policy change there are under the table dealings going on. I want to believe that the state is going to be rewarded with some type of dealings down the road but at this point I’m not sure, really could just be the hippies doing feel good measures.

This should be put on a ballot for election day and let greater Minnesota decide if the tribe gets it back.

And I’d be more than ok with revisiting the treaties they hold over our heads. This is the 21st century and with all the casino monies the tribes collect [tax free], they can more than take care of thier own. Its about time for them to step up and do so. I’d be fine with putting toll booth type gating on any state-owned or county owned roadway the exits into a casino and make the passage fee hurt for those wanting to go in.

The White Earth Band formed when mostly Mille Lacs Ojibwe were sold out by their tribal leaders and moved westward. That is the story told at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum by natives.

There is a significant difference between the White Earth Band and the Red Lake Band.

The White Earth band (poor) lives intermingled with whites. I have seen no indication of outward animosity either way. The proposed legislation (albeit could change) states that the state land returned to the band would be open to tribal members and non-tribal people alike. The land is mostly poor soil woodlands interspersed with some decent lakes (developed shorelines) and wetlands. Decent hunting if so inclined to visit there. Much of that area was absolutely crushed by windstorm years ago … so even timber value across much of the land is still many years away.

The Red Lake band is poor and bitter. They have decided to isolate themselves and the land they call their own. Trespassers beware. If Red Lake did succeed in getting back the rest of URL … I do not think they would attempt to keep the recreational industry going – even if they owned it. They would likely seal it off like the rest of the reservation.

That will not happen. Walz and the Dems can’t even consider any type of gambling that would cut into the Tribal Casinos monopoly. That includes any type of sports betting.

Would the state buyout the resorts and other landowners then? What is the plan to compensate them?

The sad part about this is that the Red Lake Band was part of the Ojibway that forcefully drove the Sioux out of Minnesota prior to the treaties of 1837 and 1855 that gave the Ojibway title to the land previously held by the Sioux. So along with this action, there should be legislation that gives the Sioux back their lands that were taken by the current bands. The headquarters of the Sioux Nation was the western shores of Lake Mille Lacs, where the casino currently is. Stop at the Historical Marker south of the casino on 169, it talks about Chief Izaty, a Sioux Chief. Why aren’t they held accountable to the Sioux?

From my understanding there is way more to adding land to a reservation than a tribe just buying or being given it. The Feds need to get involved. The legislature can’t just give land away because some bleeding hearts feel guilty about their inner hatred for a group of people.

The weak leadership in this state is just trash. Yeah a handful, ever drove around the lake and took a peak? WTF flame

Late 90’s, early 00’s me and a couple buddies were heading to LOTW’s for ice out pike. Decided to go west side of Red for some reason. I was driving at least 90mph at about 3 a.m. was on the road a good 5 hours and by this time had “white line fever”. I still remember seeing the reflection on the side of the sheriffs car, but it didn’t even register in my mind until I seen the cherries. Motored right past him. When he caught up he jacked me up pretty good. Saying he wouldn’t have even stopped for him in that area at that time of night. He literally told me to not stop in town. Not even at the stop sign. And never come here again. It was a Sh!t hole. Couldn’t even read the road signs, they were so shot up with bullet holes. Haven’t been back since.

Well the Dems are just doing what they have been paid to do.
Why do you think they were all suddenly ready to make weed legal in Minnesota, oh could it be that the Red Lake band had a weed selling industry already set to go?
The Mille lacs casino must be slipping because now they are starting a marijauna growing facility.
With that they’ll easily buy whoever they want.

Given the current political and social climate the Indians are getting all they can. They are also trying to ban pull tab sales in bars. AKA charitable gaming. My wife works pull tabs part time at one of the local bars. She loves it. It allows her to socialize more and she can make some pretty decent money. A lot of local charities will suffer without pull tab donations.

I have no idea what the chances of it actually happening are but the organization my wife works for is quite concerned about it so that tells me the likely hood of it happening is strong. Walz never comes to this part of the state even to campaign. He knows he’s not welcome here and he gets none of these votes. Proof the metro decides for the rest of us who governs this state and the metro vote is fixed. Your vote counts only if you filled in the D dot.

The paper pulltabs I dont think are at risk but the E machines absolutely are in their current state and are set to be either gone or completely different in like a year. Gone would be the progressive type games like voodoo guru or martian invasion and the bingo games. The rest would be forced to change to more like a regular paper pull tab with no bonuses etc.
This would kill a lot of small bars who really only made it through covid because of the money they brought in from the proceeds of these games.

Jimmy Jones – absolutely – they need to take care of their own – talk about Prejudiced – to their own “BROTHERS” they screw anyone without the “correct” bloodline to he wall

Queenswake – from what I read in the bill ( albeit a more cursory reading on my part) they did set aside money which I reasoned was to buy out people/businesses whatever) but it did not seem like a lot of money and THAT money would be avail through FY 2034?!

Dave Anderson – yeah, history is full of conquests – how come we’re not hating on the Ojibway for taking land from the Sioux ( and most of the other tribes in this country constantly fought over land and took prisoners.)
This mindset is outdated and serves no purpose.

They’ll continue to rake in the Casino money, now the weed money and we’ll continue to subsidize everything.

    Update:

The Senate companion bill to transfer the land and rest of the lake had its first reading today.

To be 100% honest, I thought I’d see more organized opposition by MN anglers who frequent the area. If the “fight” is left up to the locals around the Eastern side of URL, this could keep spiraling solely due to demographics in a sparsely populated area.

Where will I find the 10,000 annual YouTube videos about “early ice walleyes” if URL is not an option?!?!?

I agree, I think a lot of people don’t believe this is going on in the state. The few guys and gals I’ve talked to about this pretty much look at me like I’m from mars. Like alot things it has to happen then they’ll be like well I had no idea…
On another note is there any groups formed for fighting this kinda of stuff?

I believe the limiting of the bonuses or ETabs in general is a compromise to get sports betting passed. While I think it’s dumb that the state needs to compromise with Casinos, I will take it if sports betting is passed. As long as you are able to remotely place bets.

There are some local Facebook groups and town meetings organized up in the Waskish area. Regardless of how passionate those local people feel they don’t quantify to the “numbers” that the talking heads in the Metro Area who are likely to push this will recognize. It will take more than angry locals to that area to make this go away quickly.

I’m curious as to why West wind hasn’t started a campaign through their Facebook platform to help individuals contact their local representatives and voice opposition to this??? Maybe they’ve already got plans to sell out??? All it takes is someone to set up the localized contact link and write a letter that can be individually signed by all constituents that will automatically go to their respective state legislators and can be sent nationally also. But maybe the tribes have already gotten to the larger landowners and resort owners up there???
