In this video I melt down some old plastic baits and make new laminate baits using both colors of the old plastic baits.

Great idea to reuse plastic that otherwise would likely be thrown away. Wish I had a setup i could use to do this.

Some care has to be taken in deciding which plastics to re-melt. Gulp, Trigger-X, Powerbait, Exude are all common plastics that one should not be melting for re-casting baits. The Gulp and Trigger-X products have a water-based product and that alone can yield some very nasty blow-ups while melting. Secondarily all of those mentioned contain scent components that noxious when the plastic is re-melted. There are other scented products in the market-place that can give off some very nasty fumes and odors too. While the respirator might protect a person doing the immediate re-melting, those fumes travel in open air and can affect others not so lucky to be wearing the device.

Whether re-melting is on your schedule or not, all plastics users should carry an old coffee can with a lid to toss used plastics into so they can get disposed of properly once home.

Open-pour molds can be made from RTV silicone or even plaster-of-paris using new plastic baits as the forms. Using the re-melted old baits is a prudent way to get “new” baits in some un-real colors. Of course the injectable molds shown here in Skimpy’s video produce higher quality baits. Skimpy does a great job with his baits.
