Rec’s on a home Red Dot .45?

The Sig string got me thinking about replacing my current .45 with a newer version and red dot optics. I like the p365xl sig with holosun 507 I updated to from a Ruger SR9. My current .45 is a ruger SR45. I’d like the red dot, 10+ magazine, and thumb safety. This unit is a home unit and only carried in unique situations…like salmon fishing in AK. Recommendations?

EDIT: I should have been more clear that I would likely sell/trade the Ruger SR45 I have now and look at getting a new .45 with a red dot.

Another holoson. I have 2 on hand guns 4 on ar platforms and 1 on a shotgun. Never once have I had a issue with any of them.

I like the Holosun, also, BC. I edited my OP, clarified that I would be looking at a new .45 with red dot and trade/sell the SR45 in the process.

FN has some options. Both in .45 and 10mm. FN545 510. FNX45 has the safety. I think only the tactical has the milling, but nice guns.

Sorry bud I thought you were asking about a new red dots for another gun not another gun equipped with red dot.
I have 3 different fn guns 1 is my edc fn503 and I have nothing but good things to say about them. As for a home gun with red dot, my opinion is night sights are better but that’s just me.

All good input and appreciated. I’m not familiar with FN but will do some looking into that brand.

10+ round 45’s are not super common. Glock 21 Gen 5 would probably the most cost effective option that fits your needs. 13 round capacity and optics ready. $650 or so depending on where you find it.

S&W is another option a performance center would be optic ready. Personally I would take a regular FNX45 over any Smith anyday. FN has very aggressive stippling and large palm size. The last one I shot I don’t think had removable grip sizes (also a plus in my book). The FN distributor highly encouraged us to beat the hell out his demo pieces. We did. No problems. Why not keep the Ruger?

Is there a reason for the .45 cal only. In a at home situation I guess I am very happy with either my glock 17 or 19mos running a 17 round mag. I prefer that set up over any of my single stack .45s I have especially in a defense situation. And if I were to be looking for a gun to carry in bear territory it would be the 10mm glock g20 with 15+1

I have a Sig 365xl w/holosun, I like to keep a larger caliber pistol for those trips to AK (not common anymore unfortunately), Northern MN in black bear country, etc. Maybe I should look into a 10MM. Like that .45 ammo is regularly available.More options if I go to 8 rds?

The Glock is interesting but no thumb safety is an issue for me, personal opinion.

P.S. Let’s please not go into the bear effective deterrent convo :)… I like having a 9mm and the second a larger round piece, personal preference.

I lived in AK for 15 years and most of the guys I worked with, including myself, the 10mm was the caliber of choice if they carried when fishing. IMHO the 10mm has better ballistics than the .45acp when looking at protection from a bear. So if one of your main reason for getting either a .45 or 10mm is for protection against a bear I would look at a 10mm. I also own a .45 Commander but if I carried when going into bear territory I took my Glock 20.

10mm is pretty readily available from what I’ve seen and bought in the past. But I buy most all my ammo online.
As for the .45 question, yes if you drop down to a single stack your options open up, you can easily find a 1911 with optics cut ready barrel and buy what ever optics you’d like. That is what i would do personally. Then you have a saftey. I do not want a saftey on any of my hand guns so my go to when walking the woods is the g20, every once and a while I bring my 1911 but not often. The saftey is my trigger finger. But I understand some guys still don’t feel safe that way nor with keeping 1 in the chamber.
I’m not sure if the fnx have a saftey, I know neither my fn503 or 509 have a saftey

I was at scheels and looked at a couple of options. I liked the glock g20 10mm and liked the kimber custom lw .45.

Any thoughts on that kimber? Comes with white dot rear sight and red optic front sight. Anyone put a laser sight on this gun?

Any recommendations on a laser for the glock 20 10mm or for my ruger sr45?

I don’t have any laser recommendations but I’ll nominate the Leupold deltapoint pro for your dot consideration.

Have one on my EDC and one on a PCC setup, absolutely love them and no problems at all. I have a trijicon RMR on a shotgun which was considerably more expensive, has a smaller window, must be removed to change battery, and is notably not as crisp. I still like it but I’ll jump on Leupold deltapoint pro sales any chance I get to add another to my collection.

No laser recommendations here, I don’t care for them. Had a bad experience with viridian in the past (well not too bad, it was free). It devoured batteries every 3 months even when not being used and sitting in a safe. I’m sure there are better options, I’ve been looking at a mawl for a rifle setup but I haven’t reached the point that I hate money quite that much yet. And I’ve got no nods to have fun with it.

No laser for me either. Just a pretty useless tool that adds crap and makes a pistol look dumb. Never would you be in a position where a laser will be needed. As for the Kimber I am not familiar with that exact gun, but I own a 1911 of theirs and find it to be overpriced for what I recieved. I have much cheaper 1911s that I’d grab before that Kimber.

Depends on how much you want to spend. If I only could buy one and wanted it cut for optics I would buy another Dan Wesson (2k to 2500ish) if I wanted middles of the road I’d probably go colt over Kimber, and if I wanted one to beat the hell out of id buy rock island or tisas. I own all these brands and I can say the rock island is the best cheap beat to hell gun ever. The dan Wesson is a safe beauty for me and the colt I have in all stainless and I carry that very seldom but it’s a fantastic gun.

I like and can shoot my Ruger Commander .45 (1911 frame) with iron sights more accurately than I can shoot my 9mm H&K VP9. Not sure what going price is now on the Commander. I know people that had Kimbers and loved them and others that hated them and sold them.

For a good value 1911, I chose Springfield Armory. For the 1911 that gets wiped down and put away, gotta go original and get a Colt, preferably 70 series. However, as of late, I got a sweet tooth for Brownings and the Hi Power is a classic John Moses Browning gun as well.

I believe Springfield and FN both just released hi-power remakes this year with Springfield offering the better modernized package at a better price. I have no direct experience handling either though.

On 1911’s I own a sig in 10mm and a Ruger in .460 Rowland, and I love them both.

I used to own a Remington and, believe it or not, that one was by far the most accurate probably due to the extremely tight bushing fitment. That bushing was similar to those on hand fit guns. I do regret selling that one but that was a different time in life where I couldn’t afford to just keep a gun I wasn’t shooting anymore.

Colt and Kimber’s can be had new for $750-$900…..$1100 for a Springfield. I might be fixing an issue that ain’t broken./ Ruger SR45 is in great shape, shoots well, and costs me nothing. I’d like a 1911 at some point but probably not a need currently.

If a 1911 is something you want to carry I would avoid the Sigs and Springfields. They seem to get damaged the easiest with regular handling.(Handling the weapon a minimum of twice daily every day). Remingtons 1911 is actually pretty good. Kimber is fine but probably 3rd in terms of easily scratched or damaged finish. We didnt have Colt or Dan Wesson on the shelf. 1911s have so many finishes and models and makers though that you can spend a year studying and when you go in to buy you find you have the whole next years lineup in front of you. To me it sounds like you need a Rock Island 10mm with some Crimson Trace grip lasers that you can switch to a better quality 1911 at any time. (The lasers dont really do squat but the grips are really nice). Or maybe I do.

Not a .45 but has anyone shot the Ruger Security 9 full size with the Viridian laser? I’ve had good luck with Rugers and for $350 w/laser this has me intrigued for another 9mm.
