An excerpt from an email I was recently copied on:

This is the first tagged lake sturgeon we have had reported from the Blue Earth River. We originally tagged that fish on 5/22/06 near the railroad bridge by Hudson, WI. At the time, that fish was 44.84 inches long with a 16.26 inch girth and weighed 18.5 pounds. It was caught and reported by an angler on 9/19/07 near the I-94 bridge at Hudson. That angler reported the fish as 46 inches long and 19 pounds. Since we first tagged that fish, it traveled 17.3 miles down the St Croix, 32.5 miles up the Mississippi, 116 miles up the Minnesota, and about 12 miles up the Blue Earth River for a total of 177.8 river miles. From what I see in our database, that is a new record for us!

Super cool! Is there going to be a news release or more to this story?

If I recall the old record was from Taylors Falls to the LaCrosse area for 108 miles.

Did it say if it was a female Darren?

Impressive. Never realized the travel patterns were that far.

Was it caught, and or picked up by a survey team again lately, or is this all seven year old info?

The latest catch was by an angler at the Rapidan Dam on 10/9/14. Fish was reported 48.5” and weighed 21.1lbs.

    No mention of gender

That is crazy, especially considering the low water areas that fish would have had to traverse to get to Rapidan.

That timeline and such is crazy…. I caught a 60″ fish on Green Bay this spring…. can’t imagine old that fish had to be.

The one in the post grew 3-4″ in the last eight years. Using too much energy covering miles.

Just taking a trip down memory lane… when you can live well over a hundred years, why not take a vacation here and there!
