I didn’t realize they were doing CnR records for all species, another IDO’er caught a 44″ on Mille Lacs this spring…

    Good for her.
I would have thought the MN record pike would have been over 44”.

“It’s the first Minnesota catch-and-release record for the fish species. It’s a relatively new fishing category.”

    The bar has been set.

I was surprised by it not being 44+ but nice fish none the less!

I used to do some taxidermy on the side for one of the a larger, longer established shops located somewhere within our state….

I was working there when the biggest pike in over three decades of business was brought in. It was caught in MN and it taped out at 46.5″

What kind of sucks about the C&R state records is that it apparently doesn’t factor in girth??? That’s a truly beautiful fish in size, color, and health. A true trophy and worthy of being crowned a state record.

I lived in ND for a decade. One time in the spring my brother came up to visit and one day when I had to work I reccomended he go out fishing for pike. It was the tail end of their spawning run. In ND you can literally catch lots of beautiful pike out of farm field culverts miles away from the nearest body of water they ran up from to spawn.

When I got home my brother had a 44″ pike he’d caught. He caught it off a ditch in a shrinking pool of a winter wheat field where the residing water level had trapped it. It was emaciated and weighed out just over twelve pounds. It was the most disgusting pike I’d ever seen and it honestly made me a little sad when we taped it out and weighed it.

Technically that fish would’ve beat this one, but it was the furthest thing from a “trophy” as you could get.

I’m guessing this state record will be passed fairly soon….and excuse me but why in the heck wasn’t pike one of the initial fish species to qualify for a state record to begin with???

It’s a beautiful fish, really cool that it was caught by a pretty young lady, more than worthy of being a state record….I’m not accusing anyone of “pooh-poohing” her accomplishment, but just for fun how about this?

The next time we’re all hoisting a drink let’s mentally take a split second to do it as a cheers to this lady and her fish. It’s a great starting point for a great category, and honestly…..

….it’s a much better trophy than the 46.5″ I was paid to put on the wall for another proud angler. That fish was a true beauty as well not caught very far from Canada but nowhere near as fat or as colorful as the fish that’s our first ever C&R record.

And cheers to you gents—may one of you fine fellows be the one to pass the bar this fine young lady has set!!!

I don’t believe its for every species. I think its just for the pike, muskie, catfish, and sturgeon (the big fish that are very difficult to weigh) that’s done by length, rather than the traditional state record which is weight (and you have to kill the fish).

5 years back, opening weekend, I released a spawned out pike which came in just a hair under 44 1/2. Really a fun battle on 8lb test slip bobber and leech. Would have liked to have seen her full of eggs. Took a few pictures and sent her back. Got a bigger net in the boat after that!
