I’m looking for suggestions for a 7’ medium extra fast spinning rod for pitching plastics. I’m hoping to find a good value rather than spending $350.

Anywhere from 6’10” to 7’2” I’d be ok with. I’ve been considering the TUCR Apex extra fast but I wish it were a few dollars cheaper.

I have a new 6’6” M St. Croix Avid that I’d like to sell or trade to get what I want in case anyone is interested.

If you can still find any of the St.Croix rage rods around they were phenemonal. I’ve switched over to Fenwich elite series myself but my go-to is still my 610mxf rage that I got for free from GM through a Xmas promo.

I’ve went and picked up and handled most rods in that power and price range and just can’t get away from the elite techs.

Rages in your rear view may seem closer than they appear. hah

The TUCR APEX is a great rod and absolutely worth the cost $195 on their website). I use this rod for plastics and bucktails (usually 1/4oz) along with my GLoomis Walleye Series 6’10” Mag Light XF

I would at least take a look at FX Custom Rods, specifically their new line called Xtreme Angler series. These rods feel every bit as good as my St. Croix Legend Tournament rods and only cost between $129-134.00. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how well they perform.

How long have you owned your StCroix Avid they used to have a trade in deal $5 off original price for every year you owned the rod. In other words say you paid $200 and owned it 3 years they would give you $185 towards the nest step up in rod. I have used this several times going to the Tournament and Elite rods.

Thanks for the tip. It’s brand new, never used. Tags still on it. Won it in a fishing contest.

Big gill, it wouldn’t hurt to check out the Cabela’s Prodigy, at $100, and their XML for $129.

I think I’m wrong Biggill, they are fast, not extra fast.

The XML is on sale for $90 with an extra fast tip. Friend just got two 6’10”. Great feeling rod. But it’s a m/L.

Limit creeks are good rods for the money too, have three.

Have a loomis imx 7′ m/L with an extra fast tip that is a great rod but painful on the wallet.

If I was looking for rods currently that 6’10” XML would be first on my list at $90.

I finally sold my Avid yesterday. I picked up a G Loomis EX 6. I found a 7’1” MH XF.

Was out on the St. Croix today and really like it so far. Puts my other rods to shame.

Took me a long, long time to finally buy a loomis. But for a extra fast tip rod they really are a great product.

What kind of reel did you match it up with?

Stratic ci4. I won the Avid and Stratic in a fishing contest this winter. Pretty happy with what I ended up with.

I almost bought a St. Croix legend tournament 6-10 MXF, but the Loomis was much much lighter… and $60 cheaper. Plus it was in my desired length.

    That’s a great combo.

St Croix’s feel a tad heavy to me too.

Just to be clear, the St. Croix weighed more than the Loomis.

Thorne Bros has a Loomis MH 7’1” XF and a M 7’1” XF. The St. Croix actually fell between this two as far as action, but again, the St. Croix weighed much more.

What type of line and # test are you using on this set up.

I spooled with Power Pro Super Slick 20#. I plan to use it for heavier jigs, rippin raps and jigging raps.

I’m going to be eyeing up the M or a ML for lighter jigs. I’d have to win another fishing contest though.

The TUCR Apex is amazing. It is deigned to be comparable in specs to the St Croix Avid at almost the exact same price point but still customizable. I have mine paired with a Pfluger Summit size 30 and 8# suffix 832 braid with a leader of 8# Seaguar Fluor.

I was just too impatient to order a custom rod this time.

I forgot to mention that I was thinking of spooling up with 15# instead.

I really like the super slick. I’ve had it before but it wasn’t paired well with rod/reel I had it on.
