Recoil rod guides

    Hey guys,

I had my very first custom ice rod made recently. I requested the outside recoil guides for quality and light weight. I used it for the first time yesterday, and we were hole hopping. It was very cold, so the guides were icing up often. I brushed the ice off the first time, and realized I bent the guides with my glove. They are not as durable as the guides on….let’s say a St.Croix Mojo. Is this normal? Do I just need to be more careful with this rod, with these guides? If so, then it’s on me to just me more careful.

    Thoughts?

Yes the REC guides get malleable in colder temps, just push it back into place and fish. They snap back into place once they warm up a little.

As long as you don’t break them when it’s really cold. They will go back when warmed up.

That’s interesting. I very gently bent them back where they belonged when I noticed it. I don’t think I broke them. I was very cautious after that happened. I’ll just have be more mindful of that moving forward.

    Thanks guys!

That’s why I use light fly guides, same size and weight but SS does not bend. Oh and cost $20 less.

Titanium, may be bent, but that kind of metal has a memory. So when warmed up, it usually goes back to it’s original shape. It’s like a magic trick, sort of.

    Right?!?!

I never understood the popularity of recoils when there is an alternative that costs 80% less and doesn’t deform in cold weather, but otherwise has identical performance.

The pac bay fly guides are also available in 5 colors. Just in case you need a fully custom rod. jester

Recoils will bend in the cold but will always return to normal after a slight warm up. Which I think actually helps you pop the ice off the guides. Just run your hand across the guides and bend them the ice will pop. I spoke with a rep from the company about this very problem. He said you can’t break them.

Recoil guides can be broken. IMO not worth the extra money to have on a custom rod if you have to be careful when breaking ice off them. There are cheaper guides out there that are just as good or better than recoils. I use them all the time on my rods.

Mine did the same thing. They go back perfect once they warm up. I have yet to break any guides.

put carnuba wax on your guides…they’ll ice up much much less

I wouldn’t build a rod with recoils – just my opinion, they’re extremely over priced. I to like Ti Minimas, however

tswoboda can be my witness to this one. I broke one this past Saturday. I purposely built two rods with REC fly guides on the tip. They become too flexible in the cold for my liking. They have always bounced back once warmed up, but this time it broke. I don’t plan on replacing it with another REC guide.

Well I guess the Recoil rep lied to me.

Fly guides are the way to go. 6$ a guide is a little ridiculous. I’d rather pay $0.50 a guide and maybe SOMEDAY have to replace one if it “breaks”
