Rear lift gate issues

I have a 2012 GMC Yukon Denali XL. My rear lift gate works intermittently. It will open manually but sometimes when I hit the button, the tail lights will flash and nothing will happen. Sometimes it works fine. Thoughts?

Dust or dirt or corrosion on the contacts… aerosol electrical connection cleaner got it working on a Buick Enclave for me. I had to spray it down about every 6 months. It was just a spray it and close the gate deal. did not even need to wipe it down.

Looks like they have issues from latches, switches and struts. I would try some new lift gate support struts, maybe they are weak enough to cause it and worse when cold.

I had a ’12 Tahoe and never had an issue with the lift gate. The engine was a whole nother story. doah

Was it the 6.2 you had issues with Ryan?

I’m going to have to pay more attention when I open the gate. I’m assuming if I can hear the latch release but not lift it would be the lift struts and if I don’t hear the latch release it would be the latch? Thinking out loud here.

That sounds like the right track to me. I had issues with mine mainly in the winter when snow piled up on the bumper and then the sensors felt an obstruction and wouldnt open.

    No, it was the 5.3L.

The 6.2 was a great motor. The 5.3 afm was another story

The 6.2 is a great motor, but may suffer the same AFM issues. My wife’s 2012 Denali crapped the bed and we have been waiting 2 months for a new GM Remanufactured engine which is on Nationwide backorder with no end date in sight.

I’m getting ready to sell mine so hopefully it lasts a few more months. Lol. I love it but drive my 2002 truck more. I’m going to buy a newer truck instead so I can get down to one vehicle.

I am going to order a 2022 Sierra with a 6.2 on Saturday without AFM. I think most all of them are coming without it now due to chip issues.
I purposely told my wife to go after a 6.2 (Denali, Escalade, etc) to avoid AFM and I was pissed to find out it had it after the fact. LOL The biggest thing is oil change intervals. We bought this used with over 100K and have no idea the maintenance history so the damage was done before we purchased it.

It won’t have the AFM module, but the AFM lifters and associated hardware is still in the engine.

CaptainMusky, would your tail lights flash when it wouldn’t open?

Correct. Sometimes I think it was if someone had shut the end gate by hand not realizing it was powered. Usually it rectified itself after a while and it getting warmer outside. It was kind of a PITA though. This technology is great and all WHEN it works.
