My brother came back from Hawaii where he said they actually serve the old style deep fried apple pies. For whatever reason you can only get the baked ones here in Minnesota. I think they switched over to the baked ones the early 90’s.

He even brought me back two of them…He stuffed a couple in his luggage and they made the flight from Hawaii to Mpls and sat around a couple days. Even though they were 3+ days old we re-heated them up @ 350 deg in the oven and they were fabulous – still 10X better then the baked ones.

Anybody else miss these?? For me it was similar to some peoples experience when Twinkies disappeared.

While I dont remember the pies ever being different than they are now, did he mention trying the taro pies at Mcdonalds? When in Hawaii with my family we decided to try them, and personally… not to good haha

    Sorry a little off topic

You might be a little young to remember but once upon a time they were deep fried like their French fries. Now they are baked.

The only other thing he mentioned was a Haupia pie which is filled with coconut.

I remember the deep fried apple and cherry. I agree they were better but very easy to get burned with.

We found the Fried Pies in February too. Tried the Taro and guess I could live without those. I’m surprised they haven’t tried to do poi pies.

Ohhh, I remember when those deep fried beauties could get so hot it was like molten lava on your tongue. The good ole days.
