Rattle Reels: Leader Line choice and hook choice?

I have 2 questions about Rattle Reels for walleyes and panfish. I’ll add that the backer will be fly line so I’m just talking about the leader.

    1.) Single or Treble Hook?

    And why?

2.) What type of line and what weight and brand?

    And why?

I was going to put a fluorocarbon leader on the rattle reels for abrasion resistance against toothy walleyes and the occasional northern but one guy recommended mono line because it has stretch which takes some the impact since fly line (rattle reel line doesn’t have any shock absorbency).

I run fly line or tip up line direst to a fluouro leader.
I typically run single hooks unless I’m missing bites, which usually isn’t the case. No mono for me

X5 on the fly line, once you go fly line on a rattle reel you’ll never go back. Tie direct to an ant swivel and about a 5 foot leader of 6 or 8 lb. flouro. Single hook or a 8/10 treble…depends on how I’m feeling that day.

    Why swivel?

So line doesn’t twist or easier to tie?

Its used to connect the fly line to the flouro leader, assume he is talking a double swivel or union not the kind that clips

In my skid house on Mille Lacs, I use Sufix Rattle Reel V-Coat in 30# (different color on each rattle reel) to a Sampo BB swivel (usually size 2) to 10# Seaguar Blue Label fluoro to a Gamakatsu red #8 or #10 treble.

I do the same. Barrel swivel makes the leader connection easy to the fly line and keeps any twist out of the line. I also use beads for a bobber stop/depth marker rather than the traditional premade line knots on fly line

The advantage of fly line is if you have rookies in the house they don’t get all kinds of knots on the floor when they bring up a fish, the disadvantages is that it hold such heavy coils it’s hard to tell where you are off the bottom all the time. I have to constantly check with my locator to see that it’s down the right distance. But I’ve tried every other line in the world and keep going back to that cheap fly line. Even that coated tip up line stays pretty kinked. If you do go with Flyline, it’s a good tip to put a different color on every reel. That way when you get that northern or you’re sleeping through a walleye and you bring up four different colors, they’re easier to untangle.

Different colored fly line for tangles is a good idea.

What brand Fluorocarbon and weight do you guys use?

Just any bead from a craft store or from bucktail/spinners will work as long as the hole is big enough for the fly line to pass through twice. Pass the line through the bead, loop around, pass through again.

I use a bobber, if your rattle reels hold the minnow at a set depth, they have too much resistance in my opinion.

I do as well. Just use the bead for a bobber stop.

Does the bead move up and down fairly easily?

    Beads slide easier when wet.

You just have to feed the line through the bead. It won’t move on its own.

I am switching from 8lb P-line leaders to 10 for my next few trips to Winni and Kab. I have had a bad run of break off’s by the hole.
