"Rapidly changing ice conditions"

Heard a news bite on the radio warning about “deteriorating ice” and a vehicle that broke through Ida. I’ve seen some water on top but not much change in the thickness so I googled it later. Per the article a guy and his 4yr old went through in a side by side and: “Deputies say the man was unfamiliar with Lake Ida and the open water channel on the north end while traveling to a fish house.”

Seems a bit misleading to me…

It was a full size truck, with a creek dumping in warm water in which the driver did not know about.

Gotta love the telephone game with so called “journalists”.

It was a side by side according to the press release on Twitter.

You might be thinking of a picture I saw from Mille Lacs. Someone sent me a pic of a truck that went through there. Looking at the pic though it looks like they drove over a pressure Ridge.

Ya’ the pix from Mille Lacs had nothing to do with “Rapidly changing ice conditions”, it had do do with a fisherman that was impatient and wanted to cross a crack without a bridge. Not a bright move…RR

Mine was off the news last night, channel 5 I think, it was Frank and Amelia BC he got dry throat or something right away and took a break, kind of funny, he recovered well. Ida, full truck, dad and 4 yr old yes? They had a pic, Chevy 4×4, white?

I was on Ida this weekend and actually drove out of the landing about 100 yards from where this side by side went through. This area of the lake has a inlet from lake Miltona coming in and has open water year round. It was really foggy and the guy obviously was not familiar with the lake. There was a consistent 15-20″ of ice on the lake besides this area. Pretty scary stuff – know your lake and talk to people about potential bad areas before going out blind.

Was out on a lake in southwestern MN Saturday and Sunday. Still safe to fish, obviously, but tons of water on the ice, and I used the same holes Sunday night that I used Saturday morning…and they were a little bigger 36 hours later. Noticeable changes to the bottom of the ice. That warm weather hit it hard (and not as much ice as normal, to begin with).

I’m not going to be fooling around out there too much longer. What a crappy year weather-wise for ice fisherman. Seems like we were only just able to get vehicles out, and were already losing ice.

I’m not holding out hope…but maybe someday soon we’ll get those morons now running Washington to accept that climate change is real, and actually do something about while an ice belt in America still exists…

There were people posting false info all over the place so don’t feel bad.

As of now the ice conditions in Alexandria have not changed at all. The ice is very clear and solid. There are vehicles and big wheel houses everywhere. I wouldn’t mind some colder weather soon though. Today we have 33 for a high and then below freezing all week. There are probably 1000’s of houses out on the ice yet in the Alexandria area.

If you watch the news the reporters behind a desk say “stay off the ice”

How about we just don’t drive where there’s moving water…

With about half a foot of snow forecasted for the next 2 days across much of the southern half of Minnesota, it may get a little messy out there. On the lakes I fished this weekend, there was about 1-3″ of water on top of 15-18″ of ice. It doesn’t look like that top water will be able to freeze before snow gets dumped on it. It might make for a slushy mess and difficult ATV travel.

I would think entry points could be an issue someplace after a full week of this mild weather and all the associated runoff.

I must have heard the news readers say it a dozen times over the weekend: “It’s 40 degrees so the ice is getting thin”. Baloney…the day before the ice goes off the lake it’s as thick as it’s been all winter. It gets rotten and full of holes, but it’s still thick. And I firmly believe that if every day here on out was in the 40’s, we’d be ice fishing in May. I was South of the cities last Saturday and found very good ice. Trucks and houses all over the place.

I actually had a few e-mail exchanges with one of the guys on the #5 a few years ago. I tried to explain to him what really happens on the ice and he told me I was wrong because he had a degree and he was a meteorologist. I replied that in view of how often they’re dead wrong, that wasn’t a very convincing argument. I never heard back from him devil

The guy on Horseshoe drove a 2017 white Sierra out of the “Summer Access” onto the Sauk River and 3″ of ice.

The guy in the white Silverado drove across a giant crack while out bushwhacking on the south side of Mille Lacs.

Those are both very bad mistakes that are almost certainly not the fault of our recent warm spell.

I personally hope the local news stations continue cranking up the “Dangerous Ice” talks. With fewer people out on our lakes and rivers, harvests will be lower and the thousands of pounds of litter left on the ice may actually be less than years past.

Call me self-centered…but some deteriorating ice that’s about 6-7″ thick would be just fine with me for the next couple months. My 1 man flip over and days without clusters of people will still be enjoyable waytogo

Up by Detroit Lakes, we’ve got more than enough ice. Almost need an extension if it gets much worse! This melt helped slow it down a bit.

there was a good solid 20 inches of ice on the lake I was on all weekend. Yea it was sloppy but it was still good ice and did not feel uncomfortable one bit driving truck and shanty on it.

Those with degrees are always right jester

All the ice that I have seen in the last few days show no signs of honeycombing.Even the shoreline areas that have 6″ of water on it.Drill it and still solid.

yeah I remember those days when it never got above 32 in winter… back in BC 10,000 or something. Amazing how things have changed so soon.

Yea and back in the 70`s we had a new ice age coming according to climate scientists. The earth was going to cool down so low that crops would not grow.

Your post here leans towards political, best not to go down that path. Like the “Morons” in Washington have any real control over our “Rapidly changing ice conditions”? roll
And you remember back in 10,000 BC?

Hey bass thumb, do you have a pic of that ? I only ask because someone sent me a pic of a white GMC and said it was on a lake in Wi. You know how stuff travels and the names of the lakes etc change

Pull ur head out of your rearend and do something about it if you think it is a problem. If you think its pollution then ride a bike to your fishing hole and leave your boat at home. Humans have no control over weather patterns. We think we do but in the end we cant do a thing about it. The u.s can change policy to be green and blah blah but countries like china and india could care less about pollution.

This is the truck on Horseshoe. The highway 22 access is directly on the 125-foot-wide Sauk River and is known as the “Summer Access”. During the winter, it’s mostly used by the four-wheeler crowd because it’s a long drag from any sort of decent fishing.
