What size batteries?

I have an ’02 620 with a maxxum 74 on the bow. I have always run group 27 size batteries and only a couple times have I drained them in a day of fishing and those were extreme circumstances using the bow mount all day at high levels(60-100) bucking a crosswind.

I made the mistake of buying crappy batteries 2 years ago and they are shot so I am buying 2 good new ones. I know what I am getting just trying to decide if spending the extra on the group 31 size is worth while.

You guys with new Rangers…what brand and size are they putting in them these days?
    Thanks

I would get as big as will fit. deep cycles last longer the less they are drained down. In other words, 31’s drained 50% over and over will last a couple years longer than 24’s or 27’s drained 75% over and over. if you’re hardcore then the extra cost is more than justified. if just going a few times a year, ehe.

Curious, what brand were the crappy ones?

Don’t know what you’re looking to spend, But I just upgraded to the Cabela’s AGM 27’s for my boat. I see Cabelas is offering a heck of a deal on them right now, if you’re a club member. Order online and get 30% back in club points. My Hamburg math tells me thats $108 credit off the $420 price for 2, plus they have an offer for club mmembers right now to get $60 off a $400 purchase. A better deal than I got!

Buckshot – I have always believed in the biggest batteries available. I happen to run Optima and have done incredibly well with them. Also – with a 620, it has always been my belief that a 36 volt system is best for that size of boat – and if your trolling motor is getting up there in hours – they do wear out in time – it may be time to upgrade that as well.

Definitely go with the largest highest capacity batteries you can buy go with the 31 series you will not regret spending the extra few bucks. Good luck fishing.

I have been running them since 06 and they were at a 100% when I just put the charger on after sitting for over six months

Jon J….The crappy batteries were the Extreme line from Batteries Plus. The crapped out after about 18 months they were still under the prorated warranty so I have a little credit on hand at BP. It is my own stupid fault for buying cheap ones thinking they would last 3-4 years. I didn’t even use them that hard.

Tommy…I have had good luck with optima batteries as well however for not that much more money I can get the 4 year full warranty vs the shorter warranty that optima offers. If the warranties were the same I’d go optima again.

I am looking at the X2 AGM batteries they have at BP, they have a full 4 year replacement no prorating.
The 31s are regularly 325 each but they have a $20 mail in rebate right now and since I need 2 the manager knocked some off of each so I’d be at $303, less my credit there and then the $20 mail in rebate.

I looked at the batteries at cabelas and the ones they had with the 4 year warranty(same battery I think), they called them the X900 or something like that were quite a bit more than the price Batteries Plus quoted me, I want to say they were $370 at cabelas for the group 31.

The Cabelas batteries you guys are referring to…is that the 4 yr full warranty model or the step down from them?

DTF, the Cabela’s Exclusive offer $75 off of purchases $500 or more, says not valid for internet orders. I wonder if it can be combined with the AGM Battery 30% points offer?

go with interstate and get the biggest that you can fit in your battery compartment.

never had an issue with mine and use mine pretty aggressively when i’m out bass fishing.

Hi Jack! I’ll take that as quite a compliment.

Also wanted to add to the thread that there are now battery holders available that were specially designed to hold the “six-pack-shaped” Optimas

I measured my battery trays and they won’t fit series 31 battery so I was running series 27s. I decided to go with the X2 batteries.

I teetered on the optima but for only about $20 more per battery after the rebate and credit I had I was getting the better warranty and better rated battery life so I figured I would try them. Time will tell if this was a good or bad decision.

Thanks to everyone for the input!!

Good luck in the tournaments this year Tommy!
