Looking for general tips for finding smallies in mid to late September. We usually fish for Walleye and Pike this time of year but have never focused on bass at all. Any general types of structure or pattern and your preferred baits of choice would be great. I have some ideas in mind but would like to see how well they align with you guys who have more experience on this type of lake.

    Thanks!

Wish I could help, I go up the first week of October and we generally target walleyes. We jig fish from 20 to 35ft so I would guess the smallies aren’t that deep, as we haven’t caught any smallies back accident.

Hey I’m just glad I got a response! Thanks for responding and good luck on your October trip. In September we fished between 28-35 feet last fall and you’re right, no smallmouth. We have a decent ability to find good sized pike and walleye; we just struggle finding eaters and have never really tried to target smallmouth.

I fish the Canadian side of Rainy that time of year, 2 things to try: 1) Topwater (Pop r’s) around any rocky point. Long casts best…. 2) Mid lake rock humps. Throw 1/2 oz football jigs with craw trailers… Let sink and drag along the bottom, pause, drag, pause, repeat …

Thanks! Do you look for mid-lake humps that top out shallower than 15′?

I would start there but many will be deeper 15-25 fow. I don’t fish much deeper than that as fish will die on the way up…

I’m going up to the North Arm last week of September. This will be my first fall trip, I was just going to ask the same question you did. glad to hear the walleye advise also.
