Hopefully the forks don’t let loose.April 4, 2022 at 7:57 am #2113660Headed up Friday – Monday, hoping the cooler temps keep the forks as is. Always a great trip.
There isn’t any cooler weather forecasted. Every day above freezing with rain. Then Thursday Friday night below freezing and day times in the 40s all week. At least that’s what my weather says in baudette

Posts: 438April 4, 2022 at 4:02 pm #2113814Really excited to get up there as a first timer, yet nervous as well. Nervous the forks will break right before we come, or I won’t be able to get my son on fish. Probably over thinking it.
If the forks break, will the sturgeon still bite?
PS- I’d love to hear any updates from the guys that head up before me (4/11).

As you can probably tell already things change quickly on the Rainy, and impossible to say what next week will bring. Sturgeon will bite if they can find your bait, but if the forks break there’s usually a ton of junk in the water too, which makes fishing them difficult for a few reasons. If the forks mess it up, you can either try and find clean water up or down stream, try and get on the ice elsewhere on LOW, or pack it up and head home. However, the forks don’t always bust loose and kill fishing, sometimes they melt slow and don’t really have a big impact, rarely but it does happen.
April 4, 2022 at 6:02 pm #2113842If the forks break look for cleaner water towards the lake and fish sturgeon. Happened to us a few years ago and was a blast
April 4, 2022 at 6:23 pm #2113850Walleye still eat when the forks break you just have to clear your line of debris. Some times it’s still OK and other times it’s awful. Rainy is a different beast. Plan to get frustrated as much as anything. If you fish rivers normally then it’s very similar, fishing current and seams. Some days it’s good other days not so much. That’s why we always give our selves a week up there.
The struggle can pay off hugeApril 4, 2022 at 6:35 pm #2113855My phone weather apps are all crazy. 1 calling for 3-6 and other says 4-8. Was out today it was nice. Watch the logs and junk floating down the river an ice chunks. 1 guy going to fast or not paying attention and smacked 1 pretty bad had to run his kicker in to dock. Hope this crap misses us

Posts: 58April 4, 2022 at 6:45 pm #2113859On my way home from 3 days at Rainy.Lots of male fish in the river right now. There hasn’t been a big push of females yet. Water temp was 37 when we left and open water was at the Pinewood Church Hole. Water clarity was close to 3′. Good luck to everyone that’s heading up
April 5, 2022 at 10:29 am #2113958Well I’ll be fishing tomorrow, hope the fish want my Bait. This is one of my Favorite trips of the year. And the only one I go one actually expecting a big trophy.
Talking with a old buddy Jason groll, it sounds like the fish are being very cooperativewalleyevision

April 5, 2022 at 11:58 am #2113994Yep. Watching the weather the next few days. Hope it mostly stays snow. Rain is just going to push those forks closer to popping open. Then more rain snow next week.
