I e fished the rainy river the past 2 springs with good success but I’m going up for the first time in the fall on 9/20 for a week and wondering what stretches of the river are typically good I’m open to anywhere from wheelers point up to the falls. Also is it a pitching jig bite or what tactic typically is best in fall. Any info to shorten the learning curve is greatly appreciated.

I should mention I’m only targeting walleyes.

I was up there at the same time last year, and September was really warm so the walleyes were still out scattered in the lake. We had the best luck trolling in 29′ water using downriggers. A few guys tried fishing in the River and didn’t find any walleyes. I will be up there again 9/24. Should be fun again.

That’s early for the river. There are resident fish, but usually there is a shiner run in the fall that moves walleyes in. That has been in November the last couple years, according to my sources. You’ll be better off in the lake if recent history is any indicator.
