We made our annual trip up, stayed at the Thunderbird as always. Drove thru snow overnight on Wednesday, snow started around Orr, heavy at times.
Made it to the Rainy Lake One Stop as they opened at 6AM to get bait, then out to unload and hit the lake. Fishing by 8AM.
Thursday – 10/3
Weather was cool/cold with a little wind but not too bad. We hit a lot of our normal spots on the way to the Brule and on the east side of the Brule. Not much to show for it, few snake northern and a rock bass. marked a good amount, we just figured the weather that came thru overnight shut them down.
Friday – 10/4
We had higher hopes since as the weather looked a little better. We went to the places where we marked the most fish on Thursday, they were still there but the bite didnt pick up much. We managed 10 walleyes but not much size to them. Also missed some as the bite was pretty light. With the forecasted weather for Saturday of more wind, we decided to try something different for Saturday
Saturday – 10/5
Trailered the boat and launched downriver a ways. Having never been on the river before, we took it slow. At least we had the Lakemaster chip to assist. Weather was breezy out of the south and rain most of the day. We found a few spots out of the main current and did pretty well ending with around 45 to 50 walleyes, a few smallies. No fish over 20in but we were happy just to be catching fish and not in 3ft waves on Rainy Lake
Sunday – 10/6
With the forecast calling for windy conditions out of the west, we decided that going back down river would be a smarter decision based on the bite from Saturday. It worked out great, finished with close to 100 walleyes/saugers and 3 were between 20in and 22in
We will be back again next year in October and now its nice knowing a place to go in case the weather conditions are bad out on Rainy Lake or the bite is off.
