This one is even more pike heavy than other trip reports I’ve done. Out of the first 7 days only about 4 hours were targeting walleye. We were on the North Arm.
Overall we had pleasant weather, low wind, and decent fishing. 8 pike over 10 with the biggest between 18.5-19. I hit my new PB of a 15 pounder!
Day 1 I was on fire. 3 over 10 pounds in the morning with my new PB of 15. Had another that day that was oh so close to 10 too. The cold front on Tuesday and Wednesday(13-14) slowed things down a bit.
Lures: Metal and specifically with spinning blades. Rapala type baits had about an hour where they worked, otherwise very ineffective. Spoons sucked too.
Pattern: Dumbest thing, make sure you were out of the wind and in a small area with weeds. Big weed bed – bad. Points outside of weed beds – bad. Channels – bad and worse when the wind was funneling through. We went back to a great spot after a few days to get skunked. The wind was blowing in. When has the presence of wind ever been a bad thing when trying to find active fish:???:
Size profile: Little or quite big. We were missing the mid-range of 5-8 pounders. Didn’t get my first 8 until about 6 days in. Lots of sub 5 pound fish to be had.
Did spend a little time chasing eyes. For the most part we couldn’t find them in 14fow or less with a couple exceptions. Did manage to troll some shorelines at sunset to pick up a couple eaters though.
Promise, I’ll get some pics posted later when I get them off my camera.
