Rain exposure when docked

In theory its going to act as a vapor barrier, so how much harder is the hull/plywood able to dry out than w carpet? Does that affect longevity? I’m not sure.

I don’t know either. I’m sure there’s some moisture down there in the cargo hold with the rats and cock roaches. jester

I cover my boat overnight when tied up in a slip or anchored just offshore. Can’t help you much but I do like keeping it clean and free of critters.

Some guys it’s a funny question, tbh I chuckled when I read it.

That was it nothing more nothing less.

For the record I took zero offense, all good.

I’m planning to go for it. Fishing should be solid in the rain and that’s what it’s all about anyway.

You will be fine. I have had mine soaked more than a few times while on the dock. Like Dutch mentioned I always have my bow pointed out unless in a harbor situation of some sort. Also if it’s going to be rough when tied to the dock leave a little extra length in the mooring ropes, you don’t want it to tight. Good luck and have fun.

guy asks question.. other guy laughs at him. I wish people didn’t have to be dicks around here. Kind of takes the fun out of this site.

Some of you guys need to lighten up. Bunch of cry babies. The OP isn’t offended, why are you?
I laughed out loud when I read the question too.

I understand your statement but really don’t think Rip was trying to be a dick in this situation. While I agree it can get more than testy between a few of us, most of the time were just giving each other a hard time. I know I have given him some crap over the years and he took it with stride just like the OP did. No harm no foul to me anyway.

I’m offended that other people were offended, yet Dirtywater was not offended and now Grubson is not offended. Oh and Rip is a big meany. That and we’re still not sure if boats can get wet inside or if carpet is better than vinyl for not holding moisture. It’s been a rough day on IDO. shock

What would really be crazy is if boats couldnt get wet on the outside.

I’ll admit I thought the OP was joking at first grin

It’s all good man, they’re made to get wet. Just don’t cover a wet boat, you gotta let her breathe.

I’d be more concerned about UV sun damage than rain, but neither are a concern for shorter periods outside.

Totally different story if you were talking months/years in the elements and not days.

    Side note:

It should be illegal for boat manufacturers to install carpet. I don’t want carpet in my kitchen, let alone in a boat…

dirtywater it’s going to get wet, don’t sweat it.I would make sure like most are saying dry it out good when you get home.It is good advise from Dutch, bow pointed out towards the lake when tied up at the dock.It does’nt have to storm to have wind and waves that sink a boat.

If you have covers for your screens, make sure the screens are tilted up so no water can pool inside the covers. That can find its way into the electronics over time. My buddy had a Helix 8 go bad this way.

It’s very evident some here were never taught the golden rule on how to treat others. 98% of Rips posts on this forum are ripping into someone for something. He’s got a smart @$$ comment to say to just about everything. His negativity, pessimism, and overall attitude drive people away from posting on this site.

Not sure how long you have been around Johnny but I can assure you not all of his posts or even most of them are that way. Maybe your reading something into it. I do understand the golden rule, I’m not sure it applies to everything in this world but do understand it. I’m sure Dirtywater appreciates your coming to his side and saving him from the bully though.

I talked with Dirtywater. We are good. Always were. I think we can let it go boys.

Sorry you feel that way Johnny.
I can certainly not post and see if we double our numbers around here.

I can assure you however from the list of private messages I have received I have helped many here catch a fish or two and vice versa.

Post-trip update: We went on the trip. The weather was crazy. We fished 24 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday. Limited out on walleyes, biggest was 25”. Biggest laker 27. Didn’t really target pike or bass but caught a bunch fishing for walleye.

We got soaked to the bone and ran out of dry clothes. Turns out I don’t have an auto bilge but I’ll be installing one this week. Whooops. On the wettest day we were fishing in another boat so our boat sat at the dock. Got back and the entire bilge was full as was the rod locker, the front compartments were starting to fill. The pump ran almost 10 minutes straight. shock Even with all that water the boat was sitting nice and high so my flotation is (or at least was) solid.

Got it emptied out at home and have all the compartments open with fans going. If we ever see the sun again it’ll do some sun bathing to finish the dry out.

I’d do it again for sure.

Sounds like a fun trip other than getting drenched. Glad you had a good time and your rig will be fine, sun is returning after the weekend.

Good report. Keep the bow up and fans going. I put a small fan in the back and point it into the bilge, too.

I hate a wet boat as much as most, but its just part of the game of fishing. If you skip fishing when your boat will get wet, you will miss out on lots of fishing in a summer. Her in Minnesota we don’t have enough open water fishing days as it is. My boat is a 2002 Crestliner 1850 fihghawk with lots of wood and carpet. Since I purchased the boat used about 6 years ago I’m not sure if original wood floors or if they have been replaced. I’d guess they are original. I do have a few spots that are starting to get just a bit soft. If I keep the boat I am going to need all new flooring and carpet in the near future i’m sure. I can tell you in the 6 years I’ve owned the boat its seen its share of rain. A few years ago I know it came home wet more often than it did dry. I always try and get it dried out as soon as possible after getting home. One nice days its sits in the driveway drying out. If rainy out I put it in the garage and get as many fans running as possible.

By the way. Glad you had a fun trip and caught lots of fish. You just can’t beat the fishing in lots of Canada.
