I was up early listening to thunder and watching lightning, both of which was threatening my morning fishing plans. The fireworks passed on so I tossed the rain gear in the van, loaded a buddy and his gear and off we went to do some shore fishing for crappies. We were not let down in the least.
The water lost a degree or two from last Tuesday’s temp of 45 but the fish apparently hadn’t figured that out yet and each of use hit a crappie on our first casts. And it just got better with every successive cast. By 9:30 the fishing got pretty quiet but we stayed until 10 ….just in case.
All plastics today. A 1.5″ paddletail and a 1.5″ stinger in three color patterns got the job done. Purple/chartreuse tail, blue/chartreuse tail and gunmetal/chartreuse tail were the productive colors in that order.
Nobody over 12″ came to play but then nothing under about 11 inches did either. The fish were very consistent in size. Today was the first day this spring in which I caught a sunfish and a smallie at this spot. The sunnie and smallies signal a shift in what’s happening there and means we’ll have maybe two more weeks of decent shore fishing before the fish will move on. Nonetheless, today’s bite was super in spite of the rain. Ya, we got a little damp but when the fishing is good enough to put 80 or so fish on the dock in a couple, three hours damp ain’t all that bad.
